‘The Art of the Clash’ Book Party Set for Thursday at Carriage Barn [Q&A]

More

The Carriage Barn Arts Center on Thursday evening is hosting a book party for New Canaan-based interiors and textile designer Sophie von Oertzen Williamson (register here).

Sophie von Oertzen Williamson

Her book, “The Art of the Clash: A Manifesto Against Mundane Design,” was published last week. Signed copies of Von Oertzen Williamson’s book will be available for purchase at the event, and she’ll be joined in a panel discussion by Amanda Loehnis of Puddleduck Designs and photographer Andrea Ceraso to talk about making “The Art of the Clash.”

We put some questions to Von Oertzen Williamson ahead of the book party.

Here’s our exchange.

New Canaanite: What was the inspiration for “The Art of the Clash”?

Sophie von Oertzen Williamson: Throughout my life and my career, I have been asked many times about how to put colors together, how to create the colorful, layered and personal style of homes I’m known for—basically, how to make a house into a home that truly represents who you are; the book tries to answer some of these questions. I want to inspire people to find their personal “clash”, the style that makes their heart sing and that brings them joy every time they let their eyes wander throughout their house.

How are you feeling about your first book’s release? What kind of early feedback are you getting on the book?

The release has been amazing. Putting these types of books together is a long and windy process that can feel a bit lonely! So getting all the amazing feedback from far and wide has been incredible. I also think the book hits a nerve, people are craving authentic voices that are not afraid to voice their opinions – and I certainly don’t hold back about my love for color and art and unique furniture!

How is the book organized?

The book is organised into two parts, the first is all about the various layers in interiors, from wall colors to furniture and knick knacks. The second one is all about the different spaces, like the kitchen, the dining room, the bed rooms, etc. We also added some personal stories into the book, as well as my favourite chapter “Be Your Own Best Guest” on how to become the most relaxed host that actually enjoys themselves.

Tell us about the panel discussion at the Carriage Barn on April 23. What would you say to someone who is on the fence about attending?

The event isn’t just a panel discussion, it’s also a lovely way to connect and mingle and get a copy of the book, signed by me. I’m personally always quite curious how people put things together, how they find their creativity, and just the little behind-the-scenes stories that we’ll share! Carriage Barn is such a wonderful space, and I’ll make the stage into a little vignette so it will feel more like an intimate chat with friends anyway. Amanda Loehnis, whose house ‘Puddleduck Farm,’ and Andrea Ceraso, the photographer for the book, will both be on stage with me. Both are local so this will be a wonderful time to connect with some amazing local talent, something we love doing in New Canaan!
