Ty Groff winning Connecticut region punt pass kick 2015 for 10-11 age group

Congratulations to New Canaan’s Ty Groff on winning the Connecticut “Punt, Pass & Kick” contest’s 10- and 11-year-old age group. You can see Ty’s effort in the video above. In the NFL’s “PPK,” scores take into consideration distance as well as accuracy, so under the rules, how far the ball travels is calculated and then distance from the center line is subtracted. Ty threw 93 feet, punted 61 and kicked 65 and 5 inches, for a total of 219 feet and 5 inches.

Officials with Bank of America confirmed for us that their lease on the brick building on the corner of Locust Avenue and Forest Street expired on Sept. 30, leaving its owner free to place a new tenant there.

Grace Farms will open to the public this Friday and Saturday. A new center for nature, arts, justice, community and faith will kick off a two-day inaugural celebration with a benefit concert with Aloe Blacc on Friday night. Festivities will begin with a chance to visit the new SANAA-designed River building, see a performance of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, and walk the property with its preserved meadows, woods and horse paddocks. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and Aloe Blacc takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $75. On Saturday, Grace Farms hosts a free Community Day. A complete schedule of events and activities follows. We hear the New Canaan High School girls JV soccer team remained unbeaten this season after a 2-0 win on Tuesday versus Fairfield Warde. Way to go, girls! The team is coached by Chris Mattera.

The Philip Johnson Glass House has hired Greg Sages as its new executive director, while Scott Drevnig will serve as the National Trust for Historic Preservation site’s deputy director. A Glass House staff member since 2009, Sages “has made significant strides in completing large capital projects, growing revenue in all categories, managing and mentoring a high-performing staff, strengthening relationships with local partners, and facilitating the implementation of programming such as the Veil installation,” according to a press release from the organization.

Children’s clothing shop Ella & Henry on Elm Street will open Saturday. Its European-made merchandise has arrived after clearing a customers hurdle, which had postponed the original Oct. 3 opening date, the shop’s owner tells us.

Lead sponsor New Canaan CARES, along with co-sponsors Silver Hill Hospital and the YMCA, have invited former NBA star Chris Herren to New Canaan to share his personal story on the evening of Oct. 20, 2015 at New Canaan High School. “Because of his experience with addiction, Chris Herren is the perfect person to jump-start the conversation,” Meg Domino, executive director of New Canaan CARES, said in a press release. “It is imperative that we act collaboratively as a community to raise awareness and provide sufficient prevention and treatment efforts.” The event will include a Q&A with Herren. Registration is required.
