New Canaan police last week arrested a 29-year-old Hartford man in connection with car and home break-ins and burglaries from July, and brought additional charges against a 39-year-old Hartford woman already arrested in connection with credit card thefts.
The new charges follow the arrest last month of a New Haven man suspected in more recent thefts from parked cars in New Canaan, and local police say the individuals are part of a larger group that’s been carrying out a coordinated criminal effort here in town.
At 3 p.m. last Wednesday, Nov. 4, picked up the 29-year-old from state Superior Court in Hartford and arrested him by warrant on two counts of third-degree identity theft and illegal use of a credit card. He is accused of receiving and illegally using credit cards stolen from cars and homes in New Canaan, according to police.
Specifically, he has been connected with cards stolen during a July 29 incident on South Bald Hill Road, police said. That morning, a resident discovered a sliding door to his home office was opened and that he later discovered that credit cards were missing. According to police, the man’s credit card company alerted him to what appeared to be several fraudulent charges, and that’s when he noticed that the cards had gone missing.
The 29-year-old was released on $7,500 bond and scheduled to appear Nov. 19 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
Separately, in connection with a motor vehicle break-in that occurred on Sturbridge Hill Road on July 28, New Canaan police traveled to the Bloomfield Police Department to pick up the 39-year-old woman, held on active police warrants here for three counts of identity theft, three counts of conspiracy to commit identity theft and conspiracy to commit credit card theft.
She had been arrested last month on similar charges after police connected her to the credit cards (which she used, as captured on video) stolen during break-ins in New Canaan in July and August.
For the more recent charges, she was held on $10,000 bond and scheduled to appear Nov. 3 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
