With the heat ramping up, and more days above 90 degrees forecasted for this summer—the National Weather Service is calling for sunshine and 80-plus-degree temps all week—New Canaan dessert shops such as Baskin Robbins, Gelatissimo Artisan Gelato and Swirl are ready to help locals “beat the heat.”
Baskin Robbins on Main Street long has served as a hub for those who want something cold and sweet. Baskin Robbins worker Felisha Swaby told NewCanaanite.com that the most coveted order is the Mint Chocolate Chip Shake. Easy to drink, customers won’t have to worry about this shake melting like conventional ice cream cups and cones, she said.
Gelatissimo Artisan Gelato owner Nuccia Mazzonetto hand-makes her gelati and has gained a great reputation among those who know quality New Canaan desserts.
Her homemade Italian style is evidenced by the natural swirls and texture within the gelato.
Mazzonetto noted that the mint flavor is very popular at her shop—mint clearly is the option for the summer. She also recommends her seasonal flavors such as the Italian Ices, passion fruit sorbets, and even watermelon—all made from fresh fruit.
Swirl, the self-serve frozen yogurt shop on Cherry Street, completes the trifecta of New Canaan frozen confections. Customers are to help themselves to frozen yogurt machines, replete with popular and seasonal options. Year-round favorites like Cake Batter and Vanilla are supplemented by seasonal selections, one being Pomegranate Raspberry Sorbet, which is currently offered, according to Swirl owner Sonny Yi.
What makes Swirl even more engaging is the resplendent condiment station that customers are encouraged to sprinkle over their frozen yogurt of choice, Yi said. If you want to make your dessert healthier, there are a wide variety of fruits available like strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, he said. However if you need your sugar fix, forego the fruit and help yourself to the ever satisfying cookie dough and chocolate toppings.
