Police on Friday night arrested a 35-year-old Bridgeport man who nearly crashed his car with several children in the vehicle.

At about 8:08 p.m. on April 21, officers were dispatched to New Norwalk Road on a report of an erratic driver who had nearly caused several head-on collisions, according to a police report.

Those who saw the vehicle also told police they saw several children inside who were not strapped in by seatbelts or car seats, the report said.

Police stopped the car on Heritage Hill Road, it said.

On speaking with the driver, officers smelled a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and saw four children unrestrained within the vehicle, ages 1, 3, 5 and 6, police said.

The motorist failed field sobriety tests and a blood-alcohol content test later showed that he was at nearly twice the legal limit, according to police.

He was charged with driving under the influence as well as risk of injury to children, a Class C felony offense.

Police released the man on $2,750 bond and scheduled him to appear May 3 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
