On a beautiful beginning to the month of July, NewCanaanite.com headed down to the Waveny Pool to see what makes this venue a hotspot for cooling off from the summer heat.

After a swim meet between the Lake Club Swim Team and the local Waveny Gators finished up, we sat down and talked with a New Canaan resident keeping cool in the shade. Gary Cavanagh, who has been a member at the Waveny Pool for three years, praised the pool’s safety and enjoyability for people of all ages. “It’s safe, something special for the little guys over there—they won’t get in trouble, they got the big umbrellas for those who need to avoid the sun like me, and kids have a great time,” Cavanagh said. “It’s a wonderful asset for the town.”

Mr. Cavanagh recalled joining the Waveny Pool after his kids moved away and he no longer needed a large house with its own pool. “We had five children who all moved away so the house was too big for us, and the pool was getting harder to maintain. So we downsized to a smaller place in New Canaan without a pool, so this pool serves that purpose now.”

New Canaanites Courtenay Brown and Mary Balkun also noted that the pool is a great place to be in the summer. Specifically, they enjoy the casual atmosphere and ability to have a good time with friends and family. “It’s casual, it’s fun, and everyone we know comes,” Balkun said. “There’s always somebody for the kids to play with, there’s always a friend here which makes it enjoyable.”

Sitting next to Ms. Balkun, Courtenay Brown, who comes three or four days a week to the pool, agreed that the friendly environment of Waveny Pool is attractive to her and her family. “My son is on the swim team and his buddies are here, so yeah same reason.”

While both Ms. Balkun and Ms. Brown enjoy the atmosphere that is present at the Waveny Pool, they believe that they would enjoy it even better if there were more options for parents to relax later at night on days when they are not working. “It’s great that it’s open until 8 Monday through Friday but really we’re off from work Saturday and Sunday.”
