Try This: Main Street Building Match

[Editor’s Note: Filed prior to the start of the school year, this is the final installment of the NewCanaanite.com Summer Internship Program, sponsored by Baskin-Robbins, Connecticut Sandwich Co., Joe’s Pizza and Mackenzie’s. Many thanks to NCHS Senior Alex Hutchins!]

While Main Street may not have been around until after New Canaan’s incorporation in 1801, there is no denying that the street is a central part of New Canaan life. Those who walk down the brick-laden sidewalks of Main Street will find the surrounding buildings filled with shops and restaurants of all different varieties. These shops, as you might expect, have been occupied by a variety of different businesses and people who work hard to make downtown New Canaan what it is today. While their impact may be temporary, the spaces in which they perform their day-to-day tasks have not.

Faces of New Canaan: Emily Azzarito

The NewCanaanite.com Summer Internship Program is sponsored by Baskin-Robbins, Connecticut Sandwich Co., Joe’s Pizza and Mackenzie’s. On a recent, overcast evening Newcanaanite.com sat down with rising NCHS senior Emily Azzarito in front of Starbucks to talk about her life and musical career. See below for the entire transcription of our interview. NewCanaanite: When did you start playing music? Emily Azzarito: I started playing—well, my mom would want me to say I started music lessons when I was three or something because she thought it was a good idea to put me in this music program with other three-year-olds.

Rising Senior Re-Laces Cleats for NCHS Soccer Season

The NewCanaanite.com Summer Internship Program is sponsored by Baskin-Robbins, Connecticut Sandwich Co., Joe’s Pizza and Mackenzie’s. Although rising senior Ryan Callahan hasn’t played soccer in a formal setting for more than six years, it didn’t stop him from giving the sport his best shot at the high school level for the first time. Having played rec soccer before moving to Texas for a few years, Callahan said that his interest in the sport was piqued again recently by three to four pick up soccer games a week with friends over the summer. “I played here in the rec league as an elementary schooler. And I played it at the YMCA up until 6th grade in my town in Highland Park, Texas,” he said.

Biz on Biz: The Candy Scoop Brings Italian Ices Back to New Canaan

The NewCanaanite.com Summer Internship Program is sponsored by Baskin-Robbins, Connecticut Sandwich Co., Joe’s Pizza and Mackenzie’s. On a recent afternoon, we poked our head into New Canaan Music for another edition of our Biz on Biz feature, where we ask one local merchant to pick a personal favorite item or service at another shop. This time we talked with store owner Phil Williams to hear what items or services in town caught New Canaan Music’s eye. As it turned out, it was the chilling Italian ices at their neighbor’s shop, The Candy Scoop, that yielded the most praise. “We like the Italian ices over at Candy Scoop because they’re great and our students love them—there’s nothing better after a music lesson than an Italian ice,” Mr. Williams said.

Participating in the ALS Awareness Ice Bucket Challenge [VIDEO]

The NewCanaanite.com Summer Internship Program is sponsored by Baskin-Robbins, Connecticut Sandwich Co., Joe’s Pizza and Mackenzie’s. If you have been on Facebook in the past week you have probably seen videos of people of all ages getting doused with buckets of ice cold water. These videos are part of an effort started by 29-year-old Beverly, Mass. resident Pete Frates, who was diagnosed two years ago with ALS, to help raise awareness of what commonly is called ‘Lou Gehrig’s Disease.’ The basic idea behind the videos is that friends will film each other dumping buckets of ice water on themselves, and then subsequently posting those videos on Facebook where they tag three to five friends or relatives, daring them to do the challenge themselves or to donate $100 to an ALS charity of their choice within 24 hours of the video being uploaded.
