Rising NCHS Seniors Reflect on the College Process

The NewCanaanite.com Summer Internship Program is sponsored by Baskin-Robbins, Connecticut Sandwich Co., Joe’s Pizza and Mackenzie’s. [Editor’s Note: This being the summer before senior year for the New Canaan High School class of 2015, we asked our intern Alex Hutchins, a rising senior himself at NCHS, to talk to classmates on how the often consuming process of researching colleges is going for them this summer. We have some terrific and frank responses here, so a heartfelt thank-you to Alex and to each of the rising seniors who participated. -Mike]

I did most of my college visiting during February break this past school year, so I spent this summer going back to the colleges that I really liked and interviewing there. I’ve also written a couple of essays, but haven’t gotten around to doing all the supplements just yet.

New Canaan Woman Strikes a Chord with ‘White Glove Consignment’ Business

The NewCanaanite.com Summer Internship Program is sponsored by Baskin-Robbins, Connecticut Sandwicht Co., Joe’s Pizza and Mackenzie’s. Weed Street’s Kristen Goormastic traces the origin of her “white glove consignment service” to simple acts of friendship: Helping out others with their furniture. “It wasn’t on purpose,” Ms. Goormastic said on a recent afternoon. “Starting about 15 years ago, I started buying everything for the family online on eBay and Craigslist. So friends started asking me informally to help find furniture or sell furniture for them, and eventually this year we decided to make it an actual business because of how busy we got.”

So started Kristen Rose LLC, which has sold furniture for more than 50 families in Fairfield County who are moving or redecorating.

New Canaan’s West Family: A Fun Summer with Fresh Air Fund Child

The NewCanaanite.com Summer Internship Program is sponsored by Baskin-Robbins, Connecticut Sandwich Co., Joe’s Pizza and Mackenzie’s. Introduced to Fresh Air Fund by her grandmother three years ago, New York City’s Janiyia Rodriguez says her favorite part of the nonprofit’s signature program so far has been playing games with her host family, the Wests of New Canaan, and spending time in the water. “I like the Adventure Park in Bridgeport which is basically a zip-line with obstacles in it, and it’s awesome,” Janiyia said on a bright and sunny afternoon this week at the Country Club of New Canaan pool, host mom Sheri West and West’s daughter Olivia nearby. Ms. West said: “Ever since she’s been here she’s spent almost all of her time in the water, so we gave her the nickname of ‘little fish.’ ”

The Wests are one of 17 New Canaan families hosting a Fresh Air Fund child this summer, said town resident Teri Reed.

Town Players of New Canaan’s Sheri Bickley Dean Reflects on Her Involvement with Historic Local Group

The NewCanaanite.com Summer Internship Program is sponsored by Baskin-Robbins, Connecticut Sandwich Co., Joe’s Pizza and Mackenzie’s. Sheri Bickley Dean, co-president of the Town Players of New Canaan (with Cheryl Petrone), had her first experience with the venerable troupe through her father, Tony Bickley, one of its very early members. Ms. Dean, a theatre major at Rollins College in Florida, had been part of a Summer Stock theatre that allowed her to get an equity card (the starting point for many professional actors) one year before graduating college. However, after marrying at an early age and having twins, she decided that motherhood took precedence over starting an acting career in New York. “I had to make the decision, ‘Do I really want to try and do the New York beat or not?’ and I said no because I really wanted to be a mom,” Ms. Dean recalled this week from the business office at the Powerhouse Theatre.
