Five prominent nonprofit organizations that foster and promote the arts are holding special events this month:
- Grace Farms at 2 p.m. on Sept. 13 is hosting its “Season Opener | Teresita Fernández,” featuring a conversation with Fernández and Grace Farms Founding Creative Director Chelsea Thatcher, to discuss her studio practice, research, materials, and site-specific work and Double Glass River installment.
- The New Canaan Museum & Historical Society from 12 to 1 p.m. on Sept. 15 is hosting its “Lunch & Learn with the Powerhouse Theater on ‘Our Town’ ” — details and tickets here.
- Silvermine Galleries from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 19 is presenting an artists’ reception, open to the public, for the 76th Annual A-One exhibition, running now through Oct. 22.
- The Arts Bash at the Norwalk Art Space, honoring chef Bill Taibe, will be held Thursday, Sept. 24. Tickets here.
- New Canaan Chamber Music is hosting its next concert, titled “The Art of Violinist Benjamin Beilman,” on Sept. 24 (3 p.m.) and 25 (7 p.m.) at First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan. The town has received complaints of cyclists, including those with e-bikes, riding on the trails at Irwin Park, which is not allowed, Parks & Recreation Director John Howe reported to the Parks & Recreation Commission during its regular meeting Wednesday.

The inaugural New Canaan Music Festival (background here) is coming to the New Canaan Nature Center on Sept. 19. It will feature 13 performances on two stages, food vendors and a kids area with activities for children of all ages, including arts & crafts provided by Bright Path Child Care Center, a music instrument “petting zoo” provided by New Canaan Music and demonstrations and information about music lessons from Musicologie New Canaan. The kids area schedule will also feature local author Pina Bird reading one of her award-winning children’s books and conclude with a concert, “Not For Kids Only” by Michael Train. The New Canaan Fire Department had 126 calls for service in August, Fire Chief William Perritt reported to the Fire Commission this week. Those included three fire calls, 11 medical, 21 hazard, one rescue, three public service and 55 non-emergency.

YMCA and In a Heartbeat Cardiac Screening Event – Sept. 2, 2026. Contributed
The New Canaan YMCA partnered with the In a Heartbeat Foundation to provide free electrocardiogram screenings to more than 110 kids, teens, and young adults in the community on Sept. 2. Screenings help identify risks of sudden cardiac death and unidentified heart disease in kids through young adults. The National Charity League and volunteers from Quinnipiac University helped facilitate the event.

A bat captured inside a Weed Street home following a report at 12:24 p.m. on Sept. 2 has tested negative for rabies, police said.

The Parks & Recreation Commission on Wednesday voted unanimously to approve Planet New Canaan’s plan to collect disused pumpkins at Kiwanis Park. Last year, the organization kept 15,000 pounds of pumpkins out of landfills. The collection dates are Nov. 27 to Dec. 7 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at the Old Norwalk Road park. Those voting in favor included Commission Chair George Benington and members Gene Goodman, Hank Green, Susan Lione, Douglas Murphy, Timothy Klimpl, Lindsey Heron, Melany Hearne, David Shea, Brittney Singer and Jeff Platt.

Congratulations to the New Canaan Beautification League on earning formal recognition for Lee Memorial Garden as a “Level 1 Arboretum” through ArbNet, the only global accreditation program dedicated specifically to arboreta. The designation places Lee Garden among fewer than 1,000 accredited arboreta in 43 nations and formally acknowledges the garden’s nearly 50 years of care by NCBL volunteers.
