Former Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy, former Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele (both Westhill High School graduates), and current Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons joined more than 100 donors, friends, family, and participants last Thursday as they celebrated the five-year milestone for Fairfield County House hospice care. Board Chair Dr. Donna Coletti announced a $1 million legacy gift from philanthropist Stephen Corman of Greenwich at the celebration. New Canaan resident Julia Portale, executive director, said in a press release, “Fairfield County House is here because a committed group of people came together to create something that addressed an unmet community need. The New Canaan Building Department on Sept. 28 issued an after-the-fact permit for an approximately $5,000 job at 238 Canoe Hill Road. The applicant for the permit was Janice Gutowski of Newtown, Pa. The permit says, “After the fact permit: conversion of first floor powder room to full bathroom by removing cabinetry and adding shower. No electrical change or changes to house footprint. Added 20 square feet. Kindly note that all the above work was done without obtaining the necessary permits. This means that all required inspections during construction were not performed.”

Silver Hill Hospital announced this week that Dr. Donna Anthony has been hired as director of its neuropsychiatric program. Anthony holds a bachelor’s degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University and doctorate in developmental neurobiology from Rockefeller University in New York City. She’s a life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

The selectmen on Tuesday approved the hiring of Thomas Ryan as a full-time laborer in the Highway Department. The town had hired someone before, but that individual’s company offered them more money to stay. The town, and other employers, are having a difficult time finding qualified applicants who carry a commercial driver’s license, according to Human Resources Director Cheryl Pickering-Jones.

In recognition of Pitbull Appreciation Month in October, the New Canaan-based Cathy Kangas Foundation for Animals will pay adoption fees for pit bulls and pit bulls mixed at Bridgeport Animal Control. Those interested in adopting a pit bull should visit Bridgeport’s Facebook page for their requirements. An approved adoption application and all other adoption policies still apply for this event.
