Marley the 9-Year-Old Black Lab: Gentle and Playful

In this installment of “New Canine-ites,” featuring profiles of local dogs, we speak to town resident Charlie Wilson about Marley, a 9-year-old black lab that the family has had since he was a puppy. Coming across Marley in Waveny, it was easy to see how calm and relaxed this lab is. “He’s gentle and never does something he’s not supposed to do,” Charlie said. “He’s nervous at first, but when Marley’s outside he is active and loves to run and swim.”

Acquired in January 2007 when Charlie was eight weeks old, Marley was a gift to the whole family. “Our family friend had 11 puppies on Christmas and we went to go look at one for us,” he said.

Year-Long Jelliff Mill Bridge Replacement Project To Start in September; Alternating One-Way Traffic

Seven years after discussions started and four months after the state issued approval to solicit bids for the widely anticipated replacement of Jelliff Mill Bridge, town officials said this week that they’re poised to start work on the project. The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday approved a $3,256,467 —New Canaan will pay 20 percent or about $651,000 of that, with the state making up the balance—for Hudson, Mass.-based New England Infrastructure, Inc. to begin the work later this summer or early fall and wrap up in late-2017, according to officials from the Department of Public Works. “Construction will begin in 6-8 weeks,” Public Works Director Michael Pastore told NewCanaanite.com. “This will be towards the end of September.”

Because of the bridge’s susceptibility to erosion, changes are needed as soon as possible. Once construction is underway, motorists will face alternating one-way traffic at the bridge, DPW officials said.

‘Early Bird Sales’ To Premiere Friday, Setting Up New Canaan Sidewalk Sales

For 51 years, New Canaan has held its Sidewalk Sale & Village Fair in July. With the third week of the month already underway, New Canaan stores and shops have already started to set up for this weekend. Although the town has had this date set for every year, the Darien and Greenwich weekend sales fall on the same days this year. Expected to lose some of the crowd to the other towns, the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce has worked with stores and town officials that many expect will please bargain-hunters and merchants alike this year. For the first time, street-level stores downtown will hold ‘Early Bird Sales’ on Friday.

New Pool Heater at Waveny Helps Drive Record Pass Sales This Summer

With hot temperatures and humidity arriving this week, a dip in the pool is on the minds of many. Early indications are that Waveny Pool will see record-breaking numbers in attendance this summer, officials say. According to Recreation Director Steve Benko, through the first week of July, Waveny Pool has already brought in its highest attendance to date and sold an abundance of passes. Jason Milligan, a member of the Park & Recreation Commission and Waveny Pool user, said a number of improvements and new amenities at the pool “have been well received.”

“I have personally seen a bunch of the kids using the new games that we have this year,” Milligan said. “Starting this Friday we will be having two camp counselors come over to the pool and do some games and competitions for the kids.”
