New Canaan Boys Cross Country: Run, Rams, Run!

In his lone year as an assistant for the New Canaan boys cross country program in 2012, Bill Martin coached a squad that totaled 22 boys. Now entering his third season as head coach of program, Martin was delighted to see (approximately) 60 boys ready to go for the 2015 cross country season. “The numbers are great,” Martin told NewCanaanite.com. “The team has tripled in the last three years, which is always a good sign. We graduated two of our best runners (Alex Ellsworth and Spencer Lyman) last year. Both boys made All-FCIAC, 2nd team. And as a team we finished fifth in the FCIAC, which was a pretty good showing.

New Canaan Girls Cross Country: Energetic, Enthusiastic and Ready to Run

After an encouraging 12-6 season last year, head coach Art Brown is hoping to see even greater strides in the New Canaan girls cross country team in 2015. With 48 girls on the projected roster, Coach Brown, who is entering his sixth year with the program, feels like the mix of girls who make up that number are poised to come together and compete with the FCIAC elite. “We have a young team with only two seniors, right now,” Coach Brown told NewCanaanite.com. “We have quite a few girls who ran last year – a lot of sophomores and juniors. We were kind of a middle-of-the-pack team [last year]. But I have seen some improvement from the younger kids and I’m going into the season with quite a bit of optimism.”

Back To School Memories: Forging Friendships in Unexpected Ways

If your TV hasn’t been flooded with back-to-school ads since mid-July, then you haven’t watched much TV this summer. I’ve always been amazed at how (at least for our part of the country) back-to-school ads start showing up less than a month after school ends. It brings the same feeling to me as when the middle aisles of CVS and Walgreens have Christmas-themed items in them starting on the days leading up to Halloween. Why does the commercial industry always want us thinking months ahead? I know, I know.

Preview: 50th Annual Village Fair & Sidewalk Sale

It’s been a tradition for many New Canaanites over the past half-a-century, and this year’s New Canaan Village Fair and Sidewalk Sale is shaping up to be one of the biggest yet. Running 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday, July 18, the event run by the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce, and sponsored this year by William Raveis, is an installment that organizers say will have all generations talking. “It’s the 50th year of the event, and what we always have appreciated is that during that time it’s always been called the Village Fair and Sidewalk Sale, because it is a fair as well—entertainment for all shapes and sizes,” Laura Budd, marketing associate for the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce, told NewCanaanite.com. “That’s something that differentiates New Canaan’s event from other surrounding towns.” “We have over 115 confirmed vendors for the day. There’s no bad seat in the house.

New Canaan High School Class of 2015 Graduation
Uploaded by Michael Dinan on 2015-06-19. After graduating from Princeton with a bachelor’s degree in English, and with honors from NYU School of Law, Stephen Vehslage worked his way toward a successful law practice, working primarily in civil litigation and white-collar criminal defense. All seemed to be going well to those who surrounded him, but inside, Vehslage had serious doubts the path he’d charted for himself was the right one. After some intense soul-searching, Vehslage decided that it was time to change course and go back to school, to become a teacher. Vehslage is now a 15-year veteran of New Canaan High School but his first year was anything but smooth, he told hundreds of Class of 2015 seniors and their families and friends on Thursday, in a keynote address during graduation ceremonies.
