Investigations: Thefts from Parked Cars around Town

Police want New Canaanites to know that there have been numerous vehicle break-in around town and that at this time of year it is important to take precautions. It is important to lock your vehicle and not leave anything of value in it, according to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc, public information officer for NCPD. ***

Police received a report of larceny from a motor vehicle parked at a Turtle Back Road home on Friday afternoon at 3:46 p.m.

The complainant, a 54-year-old female, told police that some time between 3:30 p.m. on June 4 and 5 a.m. the following morning, a wallet containing a credit card, debit card, driver’s license and $50 cash had been stolen from her car. The car had been left unlocked.

The Kiwanis Club of New Canaan Grants $16,000 to Local Organizations Serving Youth

The Kiwanis Club of New Canaan met at the New Canaan YMCA on Friday to give $16,000 to 16 local nonprofit organizations serving youth, thanks largely to funds raised at the Zerbini Family Circus last June. According to Kiwanian David Hoyle, an attorney who sits on the club’s Allocations Subcommittee, just three years ago the club was only able to give away $2,000. “I think it is just a wonderful thing to be able to give this much money away,” Hoyle told the New Canaanite. “You feel like you’re making that much more of a difference. It’s really great and it’s wonderful because of all of the work that the folks and [Kiwanian] Kathy [Holland] and [YMCA Marketing Director] Kristina [Barrett] do for the service.

PHOTOS: NCHS Senior Internship Program, through the Lens of Kayleigh Pace

The Senior Internship Program (SIP) is opportunity for NCHS seniors to take what knowledge they’ve gained in four years outside of the classroom and into the real world for the last month of the school year. From May 18 to June 17, 80 seniors are dispersed throughout New Canaan and Fairfield County working in a variety of different fields such as medicine, retail, business, teaching and many others. The four-week program runs throughout the hours of the typical school day in which seniors work between 20 and 25 hours a week. Organized by NCHS College and Career Center Coordinator Susan Carroll, each of the students participating in the unpaid internship program are working at pre-approved worksites in fields that they are interested in partaking in the future. Kayleigh Pace, a senior intern for Jane Beiles Photography, took the pictures above (and Jane took a couple, too) to give a glimpse of what many interns are taking part in at their work sites.

NCHS Community Honors Kay Timmis with a Tree Planted in Her Memory

Teachers, students, family and friends of Kay Timmis gathered Thursday afternoon for a tree planting ceremony in her honor, after the longtime New Canaan High School substitute teacher passed away suddenly in January. The ceremony was held outside the NCHS Library, and those who attended took a moment to remember Timmis as a substitute teacher and how she touched the lives of the NCHS community. Priscilla Schulz, NCHS Physical Education teacher, coach, and longtime friend of Timmis, organized the ceremony along with six other speakers. NCHS seniors Carly Risom, this year’s recipient of the Kay Timmis Award, and Sean Davidson had kind words to say about Timmis, along with NCHS faculty Lynda Pescatello, Michelle Luhtala, and Lenore Schneider. Timmis’ daughter, Kim, closed the ceremony with a speech.

New Flowers Beautify Area Outside Waveny Pool

With summer just around the corner, the New Canaan Recreation Department has been making the Waveny Pool ready for the upcoming season. Recently, the Recreation Department added new landscaping outside the pool to the make the popular summer spot’s entrance more attractive. Recreation Director Steve Benko told New Canaanite that the town has been working through the past couple of years to make the area outside of the pool look nice, and thinks that they finally accomplished that this year. “Some of the plants [from last year], just from winter kill, didn’t really make it,” Benko said. “There’s an island [and] because of the subsoil in the island we had some birch trees that didn’t make it, and then we tried a couple crabapple [trees] and they didn’t make it so we took them out and put some annual flowers in because the subsoil is so wet it holds water.”

After working diligently to find a match for the area outside of the pool, officials decided that it would be best to swap out the trees for annual flowers.
