Biz on Biz: Design Solutions Loves Gingerbitz; New Canaan Olive Oil Enjoys Pennyweights and Francos Wine Merchants

For this installment of Biz on Biz, we caught up with two New Canaan businesses, Design Solutions and New Canaan Olive Oil. When we peeked our heads in Design Solutions we spoke with the owner, Pauline Dora and asked her about her favorite businesses in town. Pauline immediately commented that she loved all of the local businesses in New Canaan, but her favorite meal would have to be from Gingerbitz, the bakery across the street from her store on Elm Street. “Gingerbitz, they have great food,” Pauline said. When asked what she liked at the bakery Pauline told the New Canaanite that the salad was her favorite.

High School Pura Vida Club to Host ‘Feed My Starving Children Food Packing’ Event

The Pura Vida club at New Canaan High School helps students become aware of children in need by participating in a series of events throughout the year to provide for specific groups’ financial needs. Next weekend, June 6 and 7, the Pura Vida club, along with many other community members will be participating in its Annual Feed My Starving Children Food Packing Event held in the New Canaan High School cafeteria. The club, run through the nonprofit Pura Vida for Children, is partnering with Feed My Starving Children, an organization that helps feed the world’s hungry. Within the past year, the club has raised $44,000 and is putting this money toward 200,000 meals that they plan to assemble with the help of about 1,000 volunteers in the community. Pura Vida for Children founder Sharon Knechtle said she is excited and thankful for all of the volunteers to come out next Saturday and Sunday.

New Canaan Library To Host George Bodenheimer, Former ESPN President on Thursday

On Thursday night, New Canaan Library will host one of the most influential people in the sports business, as part of its Authors on Stage series. George Bodenheimer, former ESPN president, will discuss his new book, “Every Town Is a Sports Town,” with ESPN senior vice-president and director news, Vince Doria. The event will start with special wine and cheese reception at 6:30 p.m., before the talk begins at 7 p.m. in the Adrian Lamb Room. In the talk, Bodenheimer and Doria will discuss the book’s message which speaks to sports fans, young people starting out their careers, and business people about ESPN’s rise as a business and in the sports world. “[Doria] and I will be getting into a discussion about the book and about the history of ESPN and some of the things that turned the company into a great company,” Bodenheimer told NewCanaanite.com.

Investigations: Larceny at the YMCA

Police received a report of larceny at the YMCA last Thursday evening at 5:15 p.m.

The complainant told police that he went into the YMCA’s Men’s Center locker room to change before going for a run through Waveny Park. He placed his items in locker around 3:50 p.m., and then left the locker unlocked. When the complainant, a 51-year-old Crystal Street man, returned to his locker about 40 minutes later, he found that his iPhone, a set of keys, and a jacket were missing. The investigation is ongoing and police are reviewing security cameras.
