Richard ‘Dick’ Wayne Ettinger Sr., 89

Richard Ettinger, age 89, formerly of New Canaan, CT passed away the evening of September 9, 2022, in Tequesta Florida. 

Richard was born and grew up in Schenectady, NY and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1952. Richard worked for the General Electric Company where he met his life love Joan Audrey Korniak. Richard and Joan were married in 1953. Richard served in the United States Air Force in 1953 and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan until 1957. Richard and Joan had three children Jill, Laurie, and Richard Jr.
Richard lived in New Canaan from 1963 until 2020.

Patricia Lovejoy Stoddard, 91

Patricia Lovejoy Stoddard died peacefully in her sleep at home on September 10, at the age of 91. A New Canaan resident since 1956, she was married to Hudson G. Stoddard for 63 years, until his death in 2017.  

Born in Detroit, Michigan on December 2, 1930, Pat was the second of four children of Elijah Parish Lovejoy III and Jane Howell Lovejoy and is survived by a sister, Gail Neale, of Middlebury, VT.  She was predeceased by her sister Cynthia Underhill Robinson and her brother, Elijah Parish Lovejoy IV. She graduated from the Liggett School in Detroit in 1948 and went on to receive a B.A. in English from Cornell University in 1952.  She moved to New York after graduation and became an editorial researcher at Time Inc.  While there, she met her future husband, who was a special assistant to Publisher Henry Luce.  Following their marriage, Pat taught briefly at the Dalton School before moving to Connecticut in 1956. In 1968, she earned her MS in Education at Western Connecticut State College and worked at New Canaan Country School for the next decade. She taught 7th and 8th grade English, History, and Anthropology and served as Academic Dean.  One of the great joys of Pat’s life was seeing her former students grow up, and hearing from them that those classroom years together had made some small difference in their lives.  Pat went on to work in the corporate sector, as Assistant to the Chairman of Champion International Corporation (now International Paper) in Stamford, CT — and in that capacity served as speechwriter and oversaw employee and shareholder communications.

Alva Matthews Solomon, 88

Alva Matthews Solomon, a pioneering engineer, accomplished teacher, beloved friend and mother, passed away peacefully on August 24th, in New Canaan, CT, 5 days shy of her 89th birthday. 

Alva grew up in Great Neck, Long Island where her father was the head of Brown & Matthews Inc, an engineering and construction firm. She was deeply influenced by her father’s career and followed him into the field of engineering. She attended both Middlebury and Barnard Colleges, graduating with a B.S. and M.S. in Science. She earned her Ph.D. in Engineering Science from Columbia University, where she was the only woman in the civil engineering department. During her time as a graduate student, she began teaching classes and became Columbia’s first female engineering instructor.

John Beresford Lanaway, 72

John Beresford Lanaway, 72, of New Canaan, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family at home on September 7, 2022 following a brave and inspiring journey with pancreatic cancer. He was predeceased by his mother Muriel, father Kenneth and brother Martyn Lanaway. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 36 years Janet (née Morris), children Scott (Magdalena), Samantha (Josedomingo), Ian (Sian) and Andrew. Cherished grandfather to Stella, Lilah, Emilia, Rowan and Quinn. 

John was born in the UK and emigrated with his family to Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1957, finally settling in Aurora, Ontario, just north of Toronto.  After graduating from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts, John became a Chartered Professional Accountant. He started his career with Deloitte in Toronto, becoming a partner at the firm at age 30.  He then moved into senior financial and executive roles in a variety of industries (packaging, aerospace, technology in Toronto, and most recently, advertising in New York City).  He also served on the boards of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US LLC and CNH Industrial.  Those who knew him know that he never drew attention to those aspects of his life.

Rachel Chiang, 84

Ms. Rachel Chiang (In), aged 84, residing in New Canaan, Connecticut passed away peacefully on August 27, 2022. 

She was born in Japan, grew up in Taiwan, came to the United States for her Masters in Education before entering the publishing industry where she spent the majority of her professional career, working for multiple major publishing companies, Wiley, Editor and Publisher, and Matthew Bender.  
Rachel also started multiple publishing ventures and nonprofit efforts in education and to aid refugees.  Rachel was proud to be Hakka, she represented New York City to the world’s Hakka Association, was a bon vivant, loved life and had a full life traveling the world.  
Rachel is survived by her children Yee-Liu, Weiyee, Peggy, Tom, Epo, her children in law, Glenn, Jennifer, Abbie and Kevin, her grandchildren Jamie, Russell, Harrison, Elizabeth, Ashley, Keegan and Alex.  
A memorial service will be held in the chapel on Wednesday August 31, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery 4199 Webster Ave, The Bronx, NY 10470. Burial will follow memorial service.
