Laurie Saggese, 72

Laurie Saggese, beloved wife, mother and Grammy died at home of cancer on June 17th surrounded by her family, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and love that touched everyone that knew her. Laurie was a woman of extraordinary character – gentle, generous, thoughtful, intellectually gifted and full of compassion. She made the world a better place and her loss will be felt profoundly by all who knew and loved her. She was born into a close-knit family where she was a cherished daughter of Herbert and Elizabeth Akelman.  

Born on May 7,1953, Laurie grew up in Amenia, New York where she graduated from Webutuck High School in 1971. After graduating college in New York, Laurie pursued a career in dental hygiene, eventually splitting her career between New York and Connecticut.

Margaret “Peggy” McElroy Cavanagh, 87

Margaret McElroy Cavanagh, known to all as Peggy, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025, at the age of 87 surrounded by her family.  She was predeceased by her father, Patrick McElroy, mother, Margaret McElroy, and brother, Eugene McElroy.  A selfless woman with a sharp mind and a heart full of grace, Peggy’s life was a quiet masterpiece of love, devotion, and enduring strength. Born on April 7, 1938, in New York City, to Irish immigrants Patrick McElroy and Margaret Delaney, Peggy was raised in Woodside, Queens alongside her brothers Joseph, Patrick, and Eugene. From her earliest days at St. Sebastian’s School, Peggy’s kind heart and even temperament stood out. She was the one who stayed after class to help struggling classmates, already living by the principle that family—and community—comes first.

Eugene Francis Ready, 91

Eugene Francis Ready, native of New Canaan, Connecticut, where he served as Chief of Detectives, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2025, at the Lutheran Home in Southbury, Connecticut. Gene has been reunited in heaven with the love of his life and devoted wife, Dorothy. He was born at Norwalk Hospital on August 25th, 1933, and was the son of Eugene Timothy and Marguerite Hoyt Ready. Gene attended New Canaan Public Schools and enjoyed telling stories of his childhood growing up in the once quaint little town. Gene was an exceptional athlete, playing all four high school years on the varsity baseball team.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Debbie Moran. Deborah C. Moran (Salerno), 57, passed away on May 27, 2025. Born on January 9, 1968 in Yonkers, New York, she was the eldest daughter of the late John Salerno and Nancy (Long) Echlin. Debbie is survived by her husband William M. Moran, her children, William, Jr., 31,(and his wife, Jennifer Prescott Moran), Daniel, 28, and Ashley, 27, as well as her mother, Nancy Echlin, and sister, Nancy Anne Salerno, of Denver. She was predeceased by her brother, J. David Salerno.

Monsignor William J. Scheyd, 85

Monsignor William J. Scheyd, 85, died peacefully on May 28, surrounded by his family and friends at Catherine Dennis Keefe Queen of the Clergy Residence where he resided for the past nine years. A priest of the Diocese of Bridgeport for 60 years, Monsignor Scheyd was born and raised in Bridgeport and attended St. Ann’s Elementary School and Fairfield Prep. He completed his seminary studies at St. John Seminary in Boston, and later earned a Master of Divinity degree from the Boston Theological Institute. Monsignor Scheyd served in parishes throughout Fairfield County, including St.
