Dr. Stephen Edward Rubin, 83

Dr. Stephen Edward Rubin, 83, longtime resident of Westport,  Connecticut passed away on April  5, 2022. 

Steve was a husband,  father and educational innovator. After graduating from Brooklyn College and New York University where he earned his first PhD in Systems Theory, Dr. Rubin, became the principal of Center School in New Canaan, Connecticut. There, he made an indelible mark on education, student success and the hearts and minds of multiple generations of kids, faculty and other staff. Center School, under his direction and with the multi-talented staff, became a social-educational experiment unlike any other. It was featured in Newsweek and The New York Times for its extraordinary atmosphere and remarkable outcomes. After closing Center School in 1983, Dr. Rubin was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Schools in New Canaan until his retirement in 2003.

Dolores T. Van Allen, 88

Dolores T. Van Allen, 88, of New Canaan and Norwalk, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2022. She was born in New Canaan on February 9, 1934 to the late John and Dorothy Ezzo (Canzoni). Dolores was the beloved wife to Charles F. Van Allen. Dolores was a dedicated, loving, energetic person. She spent over 45 years in the New

Canaan School system as an aid in charge of running the Foreign Language Lab at Saxe Middle School.

Jean K. Goodell, 92

Jean K. Goodell of New Canaan, Connecticut died peacefully on March 13, 2022.  She lived in New Canaan for sixty -two years.  Born in Schenectady, New York (September 30, 1929), she was the daughter of Chester and Jennie Kowobus.  She was pre-deceased by her husband of 62 years, E. Raymond Goodell Jr.

She is survived by son, Mark Goodell of Pawleys Island (Jane Dillingham Goodell), daughter Lynn Goodell Miller (William B Miller) of Ithaca, NY, and five grandsons:  Martin and Christopher Goodell and Daniel, David, and Kevin Miller, and two great-grand daughters Aurora and Rosemary Goodell. Mrs. Goodell graduated from the State University of New York at Oneonta and did her graduate work at New York University.  She taught school for several years before moving to New Canaan.    Mrs. Goodell served as secretary for the New Canaan Community Council, and as Trustee of the United Methodist Church, where she was a long-time member.  She was also a member of the United Methodist Women, the Children’s Service Circle, and served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross. Mrs. Goodell was a real estate broker in New Canaan for 25 years and owned Lundy Associates Gallery of Homes, Inc. at Morse Court and South Avenue.  She was a member of the New Canaan Board of Realtors serving as secretary and treasurer, and as Director for several years.  She served as Chairman of several committees and was a member of the Connecticut Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors.  Mrs. Goodell was also elected as regional representative of the of Gallery of Homes, Inc., and served as Director in Fairfield County. Jean was a kind and generous mother, wife, grandmother and friend who will be missed dearly.  She loved life and treasured the many special relationships that she nurtured throughout the years. The family was scheduled to receive friends at Hoyt’s Funeral Home on Thursday March 17 from 3:00 – 7:00 pm.

John Whittier Crosby, 84

John Whittier Crosby, of Trumbull, Conn., died peacefully on March 16, 2022. Born Jan. 30, 1938 to Charles Jerry Crosby and Marguerite Peddy Crosby (née Whittier), he grew up in Packanak Lake, N.J.

John graduated from Wayne High School in 1956 and went on to the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a fraternity brother at Beta Theta Pi and a member of the swimming and basketball teams there, graduating in 1962. 

He served in the U.S. Army Reserve and during his career worked at multiple firms on Wall Street. Younger traders called John ‘Robo-Pop’ because of all his replaced joints. 

He and his wife, Eleanora Pizzuto Crosby, settled in Green Pond, N.J. to start their family and moved to New Canaan in 1990.

Anne R. Saunders, 88

Anne R. Saunders, 88, of New Canaan, CT passed away on March 9, 2022 at Greenwich Hospital with her loving family by her side. Anne was born on June 5, 1933 in Greenwich, CT to the late William and Frances Braunstetter Russell and graduated from Greenwich High School. She worked at AMF as a receptionist where she met her husband, Charles Saunders and also worked at Bob’s Sports in New Canaan for many years. Anne and Charles were married in 1958 at St. Mary’s of Greenwich, settled in New Canaan and had three children, Cynthia and Karen and David.  Anne took an active role with her children and as a Girl Scouts troop leader could always be seen at campouts lending a helping hand.  She entertained her son’s friends and let them use her family room for their band to practice.  Anne and Charles enjoyed spending time together and with their friends.
