Congratulations to Saxe Middle School eighth grader Henry Buczkiewicz placed 10th in the nation among eighth graders at the U.S. Chess Federation’s 2023 National K-12 Grade Championships in Orlando last weekend.

The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday voted 3-0 in favor of updating the town’s Employee Handbook, which now includes a cannabis policy (page 57 here). It reads, in part: “The Town prohibits the possession, use or other consumption of cannabis by employees, whether on-duty or off-duty, except as otherwise required by Connecticut law for palliative use.”

Together, the New Canaan High School Student Coalition and Charity Link members collected and donated more than $3,500 worth of toys to the Marine Toys For Tots organization. Toys will be distributed to organizations that have received requests from families in need. “A huge thank you to all of the New Canaan  High School students and families who donated to this worthy cause and will help bring joy to so many children this Christmas,” NCHS educator Priscilla Schulz said.

Police at 3:25 p.m. on Dec. 16 received a report from the Mobil station downtown of five bags of ice stolen. However, the individual returned to make payment, so the case is closed.

Girl Scout Troop 50175 with gingerbread houses made for Staying Put members.

Staying Put in New Canaan had local youth create holiday gifts for its members. The organization distributed dozens of heartfelt holiday arts and crafts created by New Canaan CARES/New Canaan Library CARES Crafts Club as well as gingerbread houses made by Girl Scout Troop 50175. “Staying Put’s senior citizens were delighted to receive cheerful holiday greetings from the children,” the organization said.

The Town Players of New Canaan is putting on “The Puffs” Feb. 23 to March 10 at the Powerhouse Theatre in Waveny. The tag line on promotional materials reads “A Parody of a Certain Wizarding School” (more info here).

New Canaan resident Jack Callaway, in memory of his late wife, Julienne Morriss Callaway, on Nov. 18 hosted a successful Touchdown for the Cure event to fight bile duct cancer, raising over $280,000 for The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation at the Julienne Morriss Callaway CCF Legacy Gala at MetLife Stadium. Supported by the N.Y. Giants, the gala brought together more than 200 attendees. Callaway is on the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation’s Board of Directors and is the former Chairman of Global Telecommunications, Media, and Technology Investment Banking at Barclays.

Don’t throw away your Christmas tree: Planet New Canaan will accept New Canaanites’ discarded trees for recycling, drop off will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 30 to Jan. 8 at the Steve Benko Pool lot in Waveny. The Service League of Boys or SLOBs from New Canaan High School will volunteer to help Dec. 30 and 31 and Jan. 7 and 8. The effort is sponsored by the Exchange Club.
