Family and friends gathered recently at New Canaan Library to dedicate the Robert Bailey Stewart Legacy Terrace. Named for a 1961 New Canaan High School graduate and fixture of the town—Stewart worked as president and chairman of Walter Stewart’s Market and Stewart’s Wine & Spirits for more than 45 years, succeeding his father and grandfather—the terrace is located between the new library building and the original 1913 structure.

Waveny LifeCare Network hosted artist Jan Dilenschneider on its Farm Road campus for an evening reception and presentation by the artist. The Board of Selectmen during its regular meeting Tuesday approved the hiring of Donna Hutter as a part-time administrative assistant to the fire marshal and Fire Department—she succeeds Jill Stayman (who’s retiring) in the role—and Jeff Mannella as a groundsman II in the Parks Department.

More than 100 NCHS students on Wednesday morning attended the community’s marking of October as Domestic Abuse and Bullying Awareness Month. There, town resident and advocate Dede Bartlett said during an address that one in every three girls and women, and one in every three boys and men are victims of abuse and bullying. “That means each of you knows someone who is being abused or bullied,” Bartlett said. “Either in person or online, this abuse—be it physical, sexual, psychological, emotional or financial—is real. And whether it is online or in person, it is just as real. In the last 20 years, since the New Canaan Abuse Prevention Partnership was formed—2,000 people have called the police.” Bartlett noted that NCPD Officer Jeff Deak is the high school’s school resource officer and that Martha Huitron is the school’s Teen Talk counselor. “They can help,” Bartlett said. The gathering included First Selectman Dionna Carlson reading out a proclamation declaring “October 2024 as Domestic Abuse Awareness Month in the Town of New Canaan.”
