On May 11, Nilasha Thirumalai, a sophomore at New Canaan High School, performed the Mozart “Flute Concerto in D Major” as a soloist and winner of the 2025 Norwalk Youth Symphony Concerto Competition. Congratulations to Nila on her spectacular performance.

The New Canaan Police Department toward the end of May will do some overnight training in Waveny, with drones in the air for nighttime search and rescue training, Parks & Recreation Director John Howe said during the May 7 Parks & Recreation Commission meeting.

For those unable to get a slot for tours of the renovated Police Station on South Avenue starting next week, the department will offer tours in the future, Chief John DiFederico said during Wednesday night’s Police Commission meeting.

Police on May 9 arrested a 23-year-old Ossining, N.Y. man for a number of motor vehicle-related violations after stopping his vehicle on Gerdes Road for having a tinted front passenger-side window. In processing those charges, officers found that the Bridgeport Police Department had a paperless re-arrest warrant out for the man, and charged him with second-degree failure to appear. According to Connecticut Judicial Branch records, he’d been charged with interfering and second-degree breach of peace, among other charges.

Bulletin: The Howard M. Bossa and Peter C. Langenus Post 653 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States announced this week that the Memorial Day Parade Monday, May 26 with a ceremony to follow at Lakeview Cemetery. “Each year we gather to remember with gratitude and honor the proud men and women who gave their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces to protect and preserve a life of freedom for all Americans,” Frances Wilson, an advocate for veterans and the VFW, said in a press release. The parade steps off from St. Mark’s Episcopalian Church “at 9:30 a.m. and proceeds down Oenoke Ridge to upper Main Street, past the Wayside Cross at God’s Acre, past the Firehouse and Town Hall, and continues down Main Street turning and entering the cemetery through the gates on the left near Millport Avenue, the press release said. “There at the flagpole, parade watchers and marchers gather with veterans and town officials for remarks about the true meaning and purpose of the Memorial Day holiday. All residents are invited and encouraged to attend the parade and ceremony. For the first time, this year’s ceremony will have a flyover by the 118th Airlift Squadron out of Bradley ANGB with a C-130 aircraft at exactly 11am.” The parade grand marshall is Brian van der Heyden, the keynote speaker Major Charles Paksi, “a decorated Marine Corps veteran and current member of the Connecticut National Guard,” the release said.

DiFederico during the Police Commission meeting commended Officer Nicole Vartuli on her work investigating the vandalism at town parks in the past two years. Those responsible caught wind that Vartuli was closing in and “chose to go somewhere else,” he said.
