Police on Friday night arrested two Norwalk men, ages 24 and 25, after finding heroin and snorting gear in their car at a DUI checkpoint.

At about 8:26 p.m. on Dec. 19, police pulled over a 2013 Chevy Cruze operated by 25-year-old at the checkpoint, located under the Merritt Parkway overpass at Exit 36/Old Stamford Road.

According to a police report, the driver appeared “extremely nervous” with hands trembling when asked whether he’d been drinking.

The officer saw a plastic drinking straw that had been cut in plain view in a center console, and noticed a powdery substance on the straw, the report said.

When asked whether there were drugs in the car, the driver handed over three Adderall pills, the report said. The pair were asked to exit the vehicle and the police searched it, finding two more cut straws under the driver’s seat and multiple empty heroin packets, as well as a fourth cut straw sticking out of a heroin packet, the report said.

Police found trace amounts of heroin in the car, as well as a glass pipe with burnt marijuana residue and a marijuana grinder, the report said.

Searching the car’s occupants, police found in the passenger’s pants pocket two packets of heroin.

The pair possession of narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia, and the driver additionally was charged with possession of a controlled substance (for the pills). They were released after promising to appear Dec. 30 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.

Here are other charges brought at the same DUI checkpoint (police say they made about 20 other stops for minor violations, where verbal warnings or infractions were issued):

  • 10:02 p.m.: Police, while searching a car after smelling pot in it, cited an 18-year-old Cos Cob man for possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana after finding a baggie of pot, smoking pipe, grinder, rolling papers and two packages of small cigars in his car.
  • 10:53 p.m.: Police after smelling pot in her car cited a 21-year-old Stamford for possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana after finding a partially smoked joint in the ashtray.
  • 11:14 p.m.: Police detected a strong odor of marijuana in a 2003 Mercedes E Class occupied by two Stamford residents, a 21-year-old man driving the car and an 18-year-old woman in the passenger seat. Inside, they found a clear plastic baggie of pot inside a sock which itself was inside a glass jar, and also found in a bookbag a large glass bong and pipe, two grinders and a burnt joint. Each were cited for possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
  • 2:02 a.m. on Dec. 20: Police arrested a 50-year-old Weston woman for driving under the influence after she failed field sobriety tests. Police say they smelled alcohol on the woman when they confronted her at the checkpoint, noticed that her speech was slurred and that she told them she had a flat tire after hitting something—she didn’t know what—on Jelliff Mill Road. She was released on $250 bond and scheduled to appear Jan. 8 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
