The New Canaan Fire Department responded to a Woodridge Circle home with a garage filled with smoke late on the morning of Oct. 24, according to a press release issued by Fire Chief Albe Bassett.

A person stopping by to check on pets in the home discovered the fire, Bassett said.

“She properly closed the door separating the garage from the home and called 9-1-1 to report the event,” the chief said in the release. “The New Canaan Fire Department responded and found a lithium-ion battery had burned on a workbench. The fire was quickly extinguished. There smoke damage to the garage and minimal damage to the workbench. Neighbors provided assistance to contact the homeowners.”

Bassett urged residents to ensure that lithium-ion batteries are “UL/FM listed” when purchasing products that are powered by them.

“The device should only be charged with the charging device that came with the purchase,” he said. “Lastly, for added safety only charge the batteries when you are home and do not allow the battery to continue to charge past full.”

He called for residents to sign up for Community Connect to limit injury and property loss by providing contact information “so we can quickly communicate with you as needed” in event of an emergency.

For a complimentary residential home inspection call the New Canaan Fire Marshal’s office 203-594-3030.
