Five New Canaan High School Seniors Sign Early Letters of Intent to Play Sports in College
Casey Clifford, pictured here with mom Nicky, will row at Brown. She is involved in crew now through the Connecticut Boat Club in Norwalk: “I have worked really hard in high school so that my grades are strong and I don’t have to rely only on rowing. Brown was the best school for me with the best academics and rowing program. They came in second at NCAAs last year. They’re the only Ivy that really dominates NCAAs.” Early signing day at the New Canaan High School gymnasium—Nov. 18, 2014. Credit: Michael Dinan
Kylie Towbin, pictured here with parents Nancy and Scott, as well as NCHS diving coach Joe Somma, will dive at the University of Virginia: “I went on recruiting trips to a bunch of different places, and I got this special feeling not only with the coach but the team as well. I felt like they were so nice and it was already like family and I decided to go with them. We have a group chat of the freshmen that have been accepted and I’m already talking to them.” Early signing day at the New Canaan High School gymnasium—Nov. 18, 2014. Credit: Michael Dinan
David Giusti with parents Kathy and Paul, is going to Lafayette to play baseball (he’s a pitcher): “I’ve been looking at Lafayette since my freshman year and they’ve always been real kind to me, even when I had an injury my junior year—they stuck with me and it just seemed like the perfect fit.” Early signing day at the New Canaan High School gymnasium—Nov. 18, 2014. Elizabeth is headed to Boston College to play lacrosse: “I chose Boston College for the school. It’s a really good school and near a city, which I though was very attractive, and their lacrosse program is really good, too.” Early signing day at the New Canaan High School gymnasium—Nov. 18, 2014. Matty Novick with parents Lisa and Steven is headed to Lafayette to play lacrosse: “I’m going with my sister as well—my twin, Emma Novick, and I’m going because of the academics and the lacrosse program.” Early signing day at the New Canaan High School gymnasium—Nov. 18, 2014. Credit: Michael Dinan
Five New Canaan High School seniors signed early letters of intent Tuesday morning to play sports next year at colleges and universities that have accepted them.
The gallery above includes photos and information for each of these Rams student-athletes—congratulations to them and their families.
The larger signing that’s expected to include several football players and other sports will come in February, Athletic Director Jay Egan said. (Note: Casey Clifford’s letter from Brown, an Ivy League school, could be called a “likely letter” in that the university, though it offers no athletics scholarships per se, can issue an agreement signifying that it’s committed to admitting a recruited athlete.)
Emma Novick of New Canaan, a senior at Convent of the Sacred Heart, Greenwich, signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division 1 lacrosse for Lafayette College. Emma will graduate with the Class of 2015 at Convent of the Sacred Heart and attend the Lafayette in fall 2015. Of Tuesday’s signing in the New Canaan High School gym, Egan said: “It’s just really exciting for the families and the kids. It’s a fresh start for them and a happy day.”
In addition to the NCHS students in the gallery above, Matty Novick’s twin sister Emma—a student at Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich—also signed a Letter of Intent early to play lacrosse at Lafayette. Many thanks to the school for submitting the photo at left showing her signing.
According to a press release from Sacred Heart: “Emma is both an outstanding student and athlete. She is interested in science research and participated the Upper School science research program. Last year, she worked on the award-winning Urban Barcoding Project performing DNA research and received a national award for “Truly Vegetarian? Using DNA Barcoding to Detect Possible Contamination of Vegetarian Products.”
Congratulations to the Novick family and Emma on this accomplishment, and best of luck to the twins next fall.
