Police last week arrested a 33-year-old Danbury woman following a dispute in New Canaan.

At about 9:09 p.m. on Dec. 14, officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute that had occurred earlier in the day while driving a vehicle on Old Stamford Road, police said.

Following an investigation, the woman was charged with third-degree assault, according to a police report.

It isn’t clear what prompted police to bring the misdemeanor charge, just where the incident occurred, who the victim was, how the arrested woman is related to that individual or whether she was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident. Police withheld further information, classifying the matter as domestic in nature.

Under state law, a person is guilty of assault in the third degree when: (1) With intent to cause physical injury to another person, he causes such injury to such person or to a third person; or (2) he recklessly causes serious physical injury to another person; or (3) with criminal negligence, he causes physical injury to another person by means of a deadly weapon, a dangerous instrument or an electronic defense weapon.

The woman was released after promising to appear Dec. 15 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
