Larcenies at Downtown Businesses, Pot Busts in New Canaan

Police cited a 20-year-old Stamford man at 8:30 p.m. last Monday on minor drug charges after stopping him on Ponus Ridge for having a backlight out.

According to Sgt. Peter Condos, police on approaching the vehicle smelled marijuana and inside the vehicle found a silver grinder, rolling papers and small amount of pot.

The young man was issued an infraction for defective lights, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana.

Police cited an 18-year-old West Road man at 9 p.m. on April 21 for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana.

The teen, and another 18-year-old, were standing about 50 feet into the woods at the end of Llewelyn Drive, Condos said. They’d parked there, and that’s how police came upon them—on a report of a suspicious vehicle.

Karl Chevrolet on April 22 reported two sets of Michelin tires and rims (eight tires in all, worth about $4,000 altogether) stolen off of vehicles in their storage lot.

Surveillance video showed that at about 3 a.m., a man in jeans, white hoodie and hat and glasses carrying a hydraulic car jack entered the lot, jacked up the cars, put them on cinder blocks and stole the tires and rims, Condos said.

Police are investigating.

A Fable Farm Road man told police that on April 14, a $400 Stihl-brand chainsaw was stolen from his garage.

The garage door was open and no neighbors saw or heard anything unusual, according to a police report.

Three extension cords, worth $150 total, were reported stolen from New Canaan Forge at 26 Burtis Ave. at 5 a.m. on April 25.

They were taken from the utility box on one of the business’s trucks, Condos said. The box was unlocked. Though other tools were there in the utility box, none were taken, Condos said.

An 18-year-old Avalon Drive East man was cited at 10:30 p.m. on April 26 for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of alcohol by a minor.

He was traveling at 45 mph in a 25 mph zone on Long Lots Road when police stopped him and found a full bottle of Captain Morgan’s spiced rum, 12-pack of Miller Lite and—in the trunk—large glass marijuana bong, Condos said.
