Letter: Signposts Detract from ‘Gold Star Walk’ at Mead Park

Dear Editor:

With the many challenges facing New Canaan I hesitate to write about something as minor as new signage in Mead Park. The signs are part of the Gold Star Walk campaign, which revitalized a memorial path along the edge of the pond commemorating the lives of fallen soldiers. It’s a lovely idea; the new trees are beautiful and the restored bridges are wonderful.

Far less attractive, unfortunately, are signposts dug into in the ground near dozens of the trees. They are about knee-high, unfinished raw wood, cut on the bias, with plastic 2-color panels nailed into each one saying “Gold Star Walk.” They detract significantly from the beautiful setting.

There is an old bronze sign embedded in a large stone near the first footbridge which is perfect. Perhaps another one like it could be placed at the other end of the walk. Nature needs little help from humans; we often do our best work by saying, “less is more.”

As an admiring neighbor, I am grateful for the Gold Star efforts to beautify Mead Park and I would be willing to contribute funds to help remove the posts.

Sincerely,

Alfred G. Vanderbilt
