Dear Editor,
As a member of ‘New Canaan Moms’ on Facebook, I am constantly amazed at the numbers of people who post personal information like phone numbers, when they’ll be out of town, etc. I hope with this letter that people will begin to understand that ANY group on line is unsafe for such behavior. Thank you. Fanny Moran***
The New Canaan High School PFA extends its gratitude to Officer Jeffrey Deak for his exceptional dedication to our community, particularly during our recent Safe Driving Week.
In previous years, this week-long initiative relied mainly on parent volunteers. We were incredibly fortunate to have Officer Deak’s increased police involvement this year, which made a significant difference.
Traditionally, our week consisted of parents delivering safe driving messages during lunch periods. This year, Officer Deak orchestrated a daily police presence. Officers actively engaged by sharing informative messages during morning announcements, assisting in distributing daily giveaways at lunch periods and reinforcing the importance of safe driving.
Officer Deak also helped increase the social media coverage of the event by getting the Student Council to make informative TikToks and by enlisting Officer Annamarie Ceci to create content for the PFA and NCPD Instagram feeds.
Additionally, Officer Deak assembled a team of officers to administer field sobriety tests using fatal vision goggles, imparting valuable lessons on the detrimental effects of alcohol impairment to our students. These experiences provided students with the opportunity to engage in discussions about crucial safety practices with law enforcement officers, fostering a sense of partnership in safeguarding their well-being both on and off the road.
On the final day, Officer Deak collaborated with the NCFD, NC EMS, NCPD, and local auto body shops to stage a simulated drunk driving accident. This joint effort created a relatable scenario that resonated with students, impressing upon them the significance and impact of practicing safe driving habits.
The profound influence of Safe Driving Week reached far and wide, and we express our deep appreciation for Officer Deak and his colleagues’ thoughtful approach to education and community policing. The participating officers and first responders are listed below:
