For today’s Q&A with a local business owner, we hear from Alicia Brandfellner of Ciel Eau. Opened five years ago on East Avenue, the day spa starting this week is offering body and eyebrow waxing, and massage therapy, among other services, by appointment.
Here’s our exchange.
New Canaanite: You got the green light to open recently [on June 17] after weeks of forced closure, as per the governor’s order. How are you doing?

Alicia Brandfellner: Since the forced closure nearly three months ago, we are excited to start back on June 17. We have been able to do eyebrow services for a few weeks now, but next week we will be able to add massage, Cryoskin and most waxing services. Facials and facial waxing will have to wait until Phase 3. We are looking forward to getting back to what we love to do.
What has the response and demand been like from Ciel Eau clients?
We are so grateful for our clients, many have reached out and are so excited we are coming back. Can’t wait to see old and meet new friends. Thank you.
How is the experience different at Ciel Eau with these restrictions?
Since day spas are governed by the health department, we were already are in compliance. We had our health inspection weeks ago with our new protocols in place, we passed with flying colors. We will have to operate at reduced capacity, pre-screening clients when they make their appointments, wear masks, allow extra time after each appointment to clean, added a HEPA air filter to our HVAC system to filter the air properly for the highest level of safety. Ciel Eau’s experience has always been luxurious and clean—an oasis, with 30 years in the business.
Being a business owner downtown, what is your observation of people’s compliance with the public health guidelines—social distancing, wearing masks, and so on?
People are starting to venture out, especially on the sunny days, most everyone is wearing a mask, if they aren’t as they approach they usually put one on. Everyone has been great and respectful of others.
