Migoto Boba Tea is not Amanda Cui’s first business venture, but so far, it has been her most popular.
Cui first entered New Canaan’s competitive retail scene back in 2016 with Funky Monkey, which she described as a “high-end kids’ store,” but decided to shut the business down as the COVID-19 pandemic approached, just two years after it opened.
Last August, Migoto first opened its doors at 168 Main St. across from the New Canaan Library, and since then it has found itself many regular customers. Cui attributed the success to the “artificial free” ingredients used by the store.
“Everything is real fruits, real ingredients,” she said. “The customers keep coming back, they stick with the same drink, they like it so much.”
A former New York City resident, Cui moved to New Canaan with her family eight years ago, seeking as safe as possible an environment for her children.
“I have two girls,” she said. “I feel here is safer than New York.”
Despite that, Cui found herself returning to the city regularly, mainly at the behest of her daughters, who wanted to revisit its various different boba establishments. However, when doing so, she began to notice a problem.
“I know there is artificial stuff, it’s not healthy, so that’s why we decided to create our own boba tea based on real ingredients,” she said.
Migoto also offers several other beverages so that everyone has something to enjoy. Cui clarified that her business is designed to appeal to customers of all ages.
“Maybe people might think it’s for kids,” she said. “Actually my drink is for all ages, even the little kids, we have a hand smashed fresh lemonade, and for those our age, we have French coffee, like a French espresso coffee.”
When asked how the first year of business had gone, Cui had nothing but good news.
“It keeps increasing every month,” she said.
