CIA Officer To Describe Her Moscow Mission

Friday, October, 20, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Retired CIA officer Marti Shogi, the first female officer to be assigned to Moscow in the 1970s, will speak to the New Canaan Men’s Club Friday, Oct. 20, about her role as a covert officer during the Cold War.
The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. in Morrill Hall at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church with Shogi speaking to the members around 10:40 a.m.
Shogi’s remarks will describe details of her covert activities, as depicted in her book, The Widow Spy, which has served as the foundation for several television series. Ultimately, her contact, who was providing the CIA with Soviet plans and its intentions to influence events, was discovered. Shogi was ultimately arrested after placing a dead drop for her contact, interrogated and expelled.
Prior to her assignment to Moscow, Shogi was living in Laos during the Vietnam War, where her husband was a CIA officer. Her husband at the time was killed in a helicopter crash in 1972.
Shogi grew up in Darien, graduated from Darien High School and received her degree from Drew University.
The New Canaan Men’s Club has openings for new members. For information about joining, email ncmens@ncmens.club.
