David Stephen Benko

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of David Stephen Benko, age 70, on March 21, 2025, after a long illness. Born and raised in New Canaan, Dave was a beloved father, brother, uncle, and friend, whose memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Predeceased by his parents, Stephen and Madeleine Benko, and his brother, Stephen (Sue), Dave is survived by his sister, Elaine (Mark), of Wilton; his sons, Stephen (Kim), David Jr. (Mary), and Ryan (Michelle); his stepdaughter, Emilie Kay, of Seattle; his grandchildren, Rose, Miles, and Mia to whom is was known as PaKo and Pop Pop; as well as eight nieces and nephews who he loved like his own.

A proud New Canaan High School graduate, Dave was a standout three-sport athlete, earning the nickname “KO” for his legendary achievements in football, basketball, and baseball. In football, Dave was known for his hard-nosed style, he struck fear in the hearts of any reciever coming across the middle of the field.  In 1971 Dave set a record that still stands to this day—a remarkable 10 single-season interceptions. A gentle soul off the field, his friends and teammates from New Canaan remained some of his closest until the end of his life.

His athletic prowess didn’t end at NCHS; Dave continued to make his mark at Idaho State University, where he ranks fourth all-time in interceptions, solidifying his legacy as an all time great Bengal.

In addition to his athletic achievements, Dave enjoyed a career that spanned more than 40 years as a roofer. He was known not only for his skill in the trade but also for his honesty, fairness, and integrity.

When he wasn’t working he was consuming sports in some fashion.  As a coach to his sons at the youth and high school level, as a spectactor at any nearby high school event, on his breezeway watching the Yankees and Giants, or reading the New York Post sports page.  He was an amazing conversationalist on the topic with a bottomless cup of facts to share.

Dave was also a lover of dogs.  He became the go-to dog sitter for friends and family, a post he took great joy in after his own dogs had passed. He had a special bond with every dog he encountered and could always be found with a treat in his pocket, just in case he ran into one of his pals.  They will all miss him, especially Piper and Smudge.

More than any of his accomplishments, Dave’s proudest moments were as a grandfather and great uncle.  He never missed a baseball or football game for Miles, a dance recital or lacrosse game for Rose, and always cheered Mia on from afar.  When twins Stephen and Madeleine were born in October of 2023, and his grandniece Birdie was born this past November, he was instantly in love.  They all made him beam with pride.

He will be remembered for his generosity, sense of humor, and boundless love for his family.  He will be greatly missed by all who crossed his path.

Rest in peace, Ko – you’re still the best.

  1. Such an amazing gentle soul, he will be missed. Sending lots of love to his amazing boys and sister Elayne and all of his family

  2. To the Benko family:
I am so sorry for your loss. May the outpouring of love from our community comfort you during this difficult time.

  3. Another piece of New Canaan’s heart and soul passes away from us. Born, raised, schooled, left & returned from adventure, worked, lived, died in town from a family that did the same.
From the days of riding our bikes around on Saturday mornings looking for a pickup game, to you playing in front of thousands at elite college levels, you never forgot a friendship or your town.
You built a customer base of friends with your business. I can recall more than once us sitting together while I try, sometimes in vain, to make you write me a bill for repair work performed. You’d always say Tommy it doesn’t feel right. You always gave your time freely.
I will miss seeing you drive past me on Park St, smiling as you wave with George barking out the window, heading to do someone a favor I’m sure.
Rest in Peace Dave, but we still need a quarterback.

  4. A terrific soul, enjoyed many year playing with and against Dave in the Men’s softball leagues! Til meet again KO!

    • I will remember Dave as regular at Mackenzies… almost daily visits with the dogs in the truck.

A real gentleman…he never charged me for work done at the store…a cigar was full payment!!
I’am sure your family has great memories of a special guy.

  5. So sorry for your loss. He was our customer at Mobil and always happy never knew he had anything going on. Always positive and greeted us all by our first names. Will def be missed 🙁

  6. May the joy and happiness shared be everlasting, and may our circle which has no beginning and no end be Eternal.

  7. Dave was the salt of the earth type of guy . Always a smile and a conversation when you ran into him . He did our roof about 20 years ago and actually came by to help us with a small problem last summer. Just a prince of a guy . It seemed like I saw him not long ago on an exercise bike at the Y . You asked how he was doing he kinda mentioned he had an issue or two but said “ who doesn’t “. That smile always broke out when ya saw him . Very sorry for you all . I am sorry to hear I won’t be running into him sometime again.
    May he RIP!
