Historical Society Celebrates New Canaan Fire Company, No. 1 with Exhibition and Antique Fire Truck Display
Saturday, October, 5, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
FreeMike Tiani, Historian for the New Canaan Fire Company, curates a special exhibition in honor of Fire Prevention Awareness Month at the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society. The show opens Saturday, October 5. Antique Fire Trucks will be on display from 10 am– 12 pm.
Chronicling 140 years of the Fire Company’s history, the exhibition includes photographs, memorabilia, medals, uniforms and other artifacts. It celebrates the volunteers and explores the central role they played, and continue to play, in the fabric of this community.
Founded on July 4, 1845, with 24 men and a truck purchased shortly thereafter, the Fire Company was originally housed in a wooden shed on what is now essentially the site of the Wayside Cross at God’s Acre. Come learn of the Company’s evolution, the equipment it bought and fires it fought, and the crucial work it did in saving New Canaan’s residents and businesses.
The exhibition runs through October 26 in the Silvermine Gallery.
The New Canaan Museum & Historical Society is located at 13 Oenoke Ridge. For more information, call (203) 966-1776 or go to www.nchistory.org.
