Silent Movie Screening w/ Live Band Accompaniment

September 9 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

$20

All ye shipmen, cast thine eyes to starboard side… thar she blows!

Perhaps you’ve noticed that handsome poster in our lobby, for DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS, the silent movie that the Playhouse opened with as its first feature in 1923. Our hundredth anniversary passed while renovations were ongoing, so consider this a celebration of the century – for the first time in 102 years, Down To The Sea In Ships returns to the Playhouse, in a special showing with live musical accompaniment!

THE ORDER OF THE ILLUSIVE are Geoff Gersh on guitar, Zach Layton on 17-string bass, and Bradford Reed on percussion and the pencilina, an instrument of his own creation. They are experienced creators of live music for silent films, with dozens of performances in the greater NYC area. We’re beyond excited to welcome their amazing talents and unique sounds at the Playhouse for the first time!

Tickets are available now! Grab yours for the big night!

Down To the Sea In Ships (1922) contains authentic historical footage of New England whaling practices, and is politically of its time. As it predates the Motion Picture Association of America, the film is not rated, but the Playhouse advises viewer discretion and would consider this an event for those over 17, equivalent to an R-rated film.
