Police before dawn Thursday arrested an 18-year-old New Canaan man by warrant and charged him with first-degree larceny and evading responsibility.

At about 6:18 a.m. on July 2, officers were dispatched to New Canaan High School on a report of an abandoned purple Dodge Challenger that had crashed off of the road near the access road connecting NCHS to Waveny, police said.

Through an investigation, officers determined that the car had been stolen from a Thayer Pond Road house earlier in the morning, according to a police report. Evidence collected from the vehicle connected the teen to the theft, the report said. He had already been arrested in July in connection with the theft and crashing of another vehicle in New Canaan. During an interview at the time, police asked the teen about his possible role in the theft of the Dodge, the report said. Based on that interview and evidence at the scene, police obtained the new warrant for his arrest.

At about 2:37 a.m. Thursday, an officer on patrol spotted an occupied vehicle in the parking lot at East School, police said. The teen was identified as the driver, the report said. He was taken into custody on the active warrant, and scheduled to appear the same day.
