Police late Saturday arrested a 54-year-old New Canaan man and charged him with driving under the influence.

At about 10:10 p.m. on June 29, police responded to a report of a crash in the area of Weed Street and Marshall Ridge Road, officials say.

Officers found a truck off the roadway along the northbound lane of Weed Street, according to a police report. The vehicle had struck a tree, “causing severe damage to the truck,” the report said.

In addressing the local man, the sole occupant and driver of the truck, officers smelled alcohol on his breath and noticed other signs of impairment, it said.

After administrating field sobriety tests, police arrested the man on the misdemeanor charge. (He also was cited for failure to drive on the right.)

The man refused to undergo a breath test to establish his blood-alcohol level, officials said.

He was released on $1,000 bond and scheduled to appear July 9 in state Superior Court.
