Many New Canaanites spend their summer relaxing by the pool—especially one in particular: Waveny pool.

An increasingly popular Dog Days destination, especially during the sustained hot days that New Canaan is seeing this week, the Waveny pool through the summer hosts a whole range of activities: The Waveny Gators teams welcome children ages 7  to 17 to participate in swimming and diving teams, and children 10 to 13 to be a part of the water polo team.

During their season, the teams practice each morning, and participate in meets against the Roxbury Club, Rocky Point Club, Roton Point Club, Middlesex Club, Shore & Country Club—the Gators finished up recently with a meet against Newfield Swim Club (summer home of NCHS math teacher David Fine).

Kids’ athletics are held in the morning and the pool tends to get busier for visitors in the afternoons, according to Recreation Director Steve Benko.

“The best time [to go to the pool] is probably in the afternoon, around 2 o’clock. It’s probably the busiest time,” he said. “We have swimming in the morning, where we’ve got the swim team and other things going on. Depending on the weather, by 2 o’clock or 3 o’clock it’s very busy so that’s probably the best time to find people.”

During busy pool hours, New Canaanites have been taking advantage of the new amenities such as foosball and ping pong tables that have been added to the pool deck to bring variety to the pool community. “It’s attractive,” Benko said referring to the new equipment. “The kids like [the foosball table and ping pong table]. They are very popular [and] they are getting used all of the time.”

So far the Recreation Department has sold about 630 resident passes and 100 non-resident passes and plan on selling more throughout the summer.

Benko told New Canaanite that New Canaanites are still welcome to come get their passes at the Waveny House.

Although New Canaanites may not be thinking so far ahead, the pool will be open until the Aug. 30, before closing for the week and then opening back up for Labor Day Weekend for a last hurrah of the summer.

The Waveny Pool is opened from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. during the week until the Aug. 7. Starting Aug. 10 until the end of the summer its hours will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The pool is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the weekends throughout the whole summer.
