Hundreds of Hogwarts wizards, policemen, Darth Vaders, princesses, Oompa Loompas, football players and superheroes marched down a sun-splotched Elm Street on Sunday afternoon in the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce’s annual Halloween Parade.

Costumed kids and dogs—and plenty of dressed-up parents and grandparents—followed the Old Faithful antique fire engine on a pedestrian-only stretch of downtown New Canaan’s main drag, dispersing along both sides of the street for Trick-or-Treating at merchant storefronts. Cast members from the New Canaan High School Theatre’s production of “The Wizard of Oz” helped fill out the parade’s ranks, the largest ever turnout for the event, officials said.

Tucker Murphy, executive director of the chamber, called it “the best day, weather-wise, ever.” (The parade was over and road reopened well ahead of the afternoon downpour.)

“We love it when our fairy princesses don’t have to put coats and hats on over all their gear,” Murphy said.

Festivities started midday in the Park Street parking lot above Elm, where families enjoyed music, treats and balloon animals, and the parade kicked off at 1 p.m.
