Police say a luxury SUV was stolen some time between Friday night and Thursday morning last week, and later recovered in Waterbury.
The 2021 BMW X7 had last been seen parked at an Orchard Drive home at 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 3, and was reported stolen at about 7:47 p.m. the next morning, according to a press release issued by Police Chief Leon Krolikowski.
The SUV’s owner told police that the car had been locked and its keys were not inside it, according to the press release. Authorities used GPS tracking to find its location.
Police also fielded reports of unlocked vehicles that had been entered illegally on Hicock, Bayberry and Greenley Roads, with items stolen from them that included a woman’s jacket, a vehicle registration and an insurance card, Krolikowski said in the press release.
On Sunday morning, officers were dispatched to a Pocconock Trail home to investigate mailboxes that had been entered overnight, the chief said.
“Officers observed several mailboxes open and mail on the ground,” Krolikowski said in the release. “Officers canvassed the neighborhood and discovered multiple mailboxes on Carter Street were open and a large amount of mail was on the ground. Some of the mail belonged to a residence on Cheese Spring Road.”
He issued these safety tips:
Stolen Vehicle and Theft Prevention
- ALWAYS LOCK YOUR VEHICLES and take the keys with you.
- SECURE VALUABLES: NEVER leave valuables in your vehicle. Often, identity theft occurs when drivers’ licenses and credit cards are stolen.
Mail Theft Prevention
- CHECK YOUR MAIL OFTEN AND AVOID LEAVING MAIL IN YOUR RESIDENTIAL MAILBOX: Avoid leaving mail in your unsecure residential mailbox. Bring sensitive outgoing mail to the post office rather than leaving mail in your residential mailbox for pick-up.
- CONSIDER GETTING A LOCKING RESIDENTIAL MAILBOX: There are many residential mailbox options that allow mail to be delivered, but requires a key to retrieve the mail.
