Police said last week that eight more vehicles left unlocked at New Canaan homes had been illegally entered, the latest in a trend that has prompted town officials to urge residents to lock up.
Items including a wallet, golf bag and clubs, key fob, purse with credit cards and other documents with personal information were reported missing from the unlocked vehicles on Hawks Hill, Valley, Deep Valley and Lantern Ridge Roads and Meadow Lane, according to police.
The illegal entries and thefts were reported throughout the Fourth of July weekend, Police Chief Leon Krolikowski said in a press release.
“Please remember to always lock your vehicles and take the keys with you,” the chief said in the release. “Secure valuables. Never leave valuables in your vehicle. Often, identity theft occurs when drivers’ licenses and credit cards are stolen.”
According to data released by Krolikowski during the June Police Commission meeting, New Canaan through the first five months of 2021 had 18 vehicles stolen, compared to just eight for the same period last year. New Canaan also had five more larcenies from motor vehicles in May, bringing the total to 22 through May 31 of this year, compared to 20 one year ago. Police reported two more cars stolen in June, including a Mercedes GL550 taken from the Brookwood Lane driveway that had been left unlocked with the keys inside, and had about $150,000 in items left inside it.
