Police said Monday that it was an erratic driver who crashed into a utility box downtown last Friday, causing a power outage at a busy intersection that lasted two days.

At about 6:31 p.m. on Nov. 3, officers responded to a report of the crash at Park and Cherry Streets, according to Police Capt. Joseph Farenga.

There were no injuries, Farenga told NewCanaanite.com in response to an inquiry about the incident.

The light at Park and Cherry went out—police officers could be seen directing traffic there on Saturday night—and power was restored on Sunday, Farenga said. The crash unfolded just as the 6:30 p.m. train was arriving at the station on the same block, causing major traffic backups.

It’s unclear whether police will bring a criminal charge against the driver. The crash is under investigation and more details will be released when it’s concluded, Farenga said.

  1. Utility boxes like the one above can be placed underground in a waterproof vault made by a company called Infrasite (www.infrasite.com). It protects the equipment from accidents and vandalism and improves the aesthetics of the neighborhood. Perfect for New Canaan!
