A 38-year-old New Canaan woman had an airbag valued at $500 stolen from her SUV on Sunday while the vehicle was parked in the Noroton Heights Train Station lot, according to Darien Police. The Honda CR-V had been locked, police said. More info here on Darienite.com. ***

Avalon Bay Communities brought a swift housing action in state Superior Court against a tenant on Avalon Drive East who failed to pay her $3,000 rent on April 1, according to a complaint filed May 5. A Notice To Quit the premises went out April 26, the complaint said.

‘The Potential of Life’: New Canaan High School, ABC House Alumnus Is Cast in ‘Frozen’ Musical on Broadway

Jelani Alladin nearly quit the stage after his first gig, playing the Cat in the Hat in the New Canaan High School Theatre’s production of “Seussical” in the fall of his sophomore year. An ABC House of New Canaan student from Brooklyn who had met his elective requirement the prior spring by playing lacrosse—and was, in his own words, “terrible at” it—Alladin already was active in NCHS choir and Madrigals. Yet the teen found himself unable to gauge whether musical theater was something in which he truly excelled. “I thought, ‘That was a lot of work’ and ‘I don’t know if I want to do that,’ ” Alladin, a 2010 NCHS graduate who is now 24, recalled on Tuesday evening. He said as much to his friend Brooke Singman’s mother, Roberta, as the two approached each other in the long hallway behind the NCHS auditorium after “Seussical” had closed.

Congratulations to New Canaan High School graduate and ABC House of New Canaan alumnus Elijah Westbrook on making great inroads with his budding broadcasting career. Since doing a summer internship with CBS News program “48 Hours,” the Quinnipiac University grad has taken a position with the CBS affiliate WROC in Rochester, N.Y. The video above is a feature story from Westbrook regarding veterans’ marking Pearl Harbor Day. ***

For the second straight year, New Canaan Police Sgt. Aaron LaTourette won the annual Commissioner’s Shoot Award, sponsored by the Perkin family. This year, LaTourette also took home the Perkin Shoot Trophy, and his name will be engraved on a bowl marking his achievements.

Kiwanis Club of New Canaan Is Now Accepting Local Nonprofits’ Requests for Funding, Feb. 29 Deadline

A local civic organization whose mission is “serving the children of the world” announced Wednesday that it’s opening its annual season for funding requests from nonprofit organization. The Kiwanis Club of New Canaan will be able to allocate up to $2,000 per applicant and will take applications through the end of this month (Feb. 29—it’s a Leap Year). “Those interested should submit a letter with the agency name, contact information, mission statement, detailed description of program, proposed use for funds and amount requested,” Kiwanis said in a press release. “Explanations of how your mission fits within the Kiwanis mission.”

Last year, with funds raised mainly through its summertime Zerbini Famiy Circus—presented in partnership with the New Canaan YMCA—Kiwanians gave a total of $16,000 to 16 local nonprofit organizations.

Congratulations to the South School Chess Club, which won first place at the Fairfield County Scholastic Team Chess Championship. The Nov. 8 tournament featured competitors from nine K-5 Fairfield County elementary schools. The South School team was led by Joseph Ho, Michael Telesco, Henry Chandra and Luke Gencarelli, who each won three games out of four. Strong contributors included Jenna Ho and Luke Van Dussen. This tournament also brought out young talents Quinn Kilkenny, Yuna Ho and Emily Telesco who were each playing in their first or second professional tournament.
