New Canaan Fire Department officials at about 11:15 a.m. on Monday responded to a request from Officer Allyson Halm—head of the New Canaan Police Department’s Animal Control section—to assist in corralling a baby deer that had become trapped in a backyard on Millport Avenue. Halm said the firefighters were highly responsive and helpful, and the animal was freed. ***

The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday approved a contract between the Parks Department and Karl Chevrolet for two trucks: a new low-boy that will cost a net of $50,644 and a new pickup truck that will cost $41,670. Those costs reflect what officials called generous trade-in price discounts from the local dealership. “I think the Karls are being very nice to us,” First Selectman Rob Mallozzi said.

A mother turkey hopped out into Valley Road around 12:30 p.m. on June 7 to keep at bay a town woman walking her dog up near the Grupes Reservoir. The mama turkey apparently was guarding her three baby chicks nearby—unfortunately, a passing motorist struck the big bird and killed her. The pedestrian phoned the Animal Control section of the New Canaan Police Department, and Officer Allyson Halm spotted the baby turkeys but lost them on retrieving a carrier from the van. ***

Congratulations to New Canaan resident Pasquale Poccia, who became a U.S. citizen this week after taking the Oath of Allegiance on Wednesday during the 6th annual Flag Day Naturalization Ceremony at Mystic Seaport. Poccia is owner of Pasquale’s Osteria, an Italian and International/Continental cuisine restaurant on Main Street in Norwalk.

Scores of humans and leashed dogs descended on the parking lot out front of Pet Pantry Warehouse on Grove Street throughout a cloudless, breezy Sunday afternoon for the 8th annual Dog Days New Canaan fundraiser. Benefitting Adopt-a-Dog and Strays & Others, the event saw owners and their pets participate in “musical sits” and a “pooch pie eating” contest, visit 28 booths featuring dog food and treat vendors, trainers, photographers and veterinary practices while snacking on ice cream and Panini from food trucks. “We’re so thankful for the turnout,” Pet Pantry Vice President Adam Jacobson said. “The community at large for supporting these types of events, for Adopt-a-Dog and Strays & Others, to be able to raise awareness, for animals in need. We are grateful for our sponsors—Weruva, New Canaan Vet, Bankwell, and all the other food sponsors that are here today.

A 38-year-old New Canaan woman had an airbag valued at $500 stolen from her SUV on Sunday while the vehicle was parked in the Noroton Heights Train Station lot, according to Darien Police. The Honda CR-V had been locked, police said. More info here on Darienite.com. ***

Avalon Bay Communities brought a swift housing action in state Superior Court against a tenant on Avalon Drive East who failed to pay her $3,000 rent on April 1, according to a complaint filed May 5. A Notice To Quit the premises went out April 26, the complaint said.

‘Art in the Windows’ Kicks Off Downtown Thursday

Dozens of New Canaan shops will stay open late Thursday, as live music, artist receptions, wine tastings and other special events are held throughout the business district to mark the launch of Art in the Windows. Residents are invited to stroll the streets of New Canaan from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for the 10th annual Art in the Windows. A record-70 stores are participating in this year’s event, featuring photos, paintings, sculpture and mixed media pieces from as many artists, 31 of them New Canaanites (see gallery above), according to Hilary Witmann, executive director of the Carriage Barn Arts Center. The Waveny-based nonprofit organized the event, which is sponsored by Bankwell, New Canaan Board of Realtors and Hutchinson Tree Care Specialists, in partnership with the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce. “It’s great that we have more stores than ever and a lot of New Canaan artists, which is one of the things I really wanted to bring in this year, in addition to the great artists who are members of the Carriage Barn and exhibit in a lot of shows,” Witmann told NewCanaanite.com.
