PHOTOS: Caffeine & Carburetors Wraps Up 2015 Season with Strong Turnout at Waveny

Antique, classic, muscle, racing and speciality car enthusiasts descended on Waveny Park on a crisp, cool autumn morning Sunday for 2015’s final Caffeine & Carburetors gathering. Town officials had approved four installments this year of the popular event, launched by New Canaan’s Doug Zumbach and sponsored primarily by Bankwell (whose Lucy French provided us the photo at right), between April and October: two downtown and two at Waveny. After foul weather forced a cancellation of the September gathering downtown, thousands of spectators ventured to the park. Town resident and collector Peter Bush of The Fox 95.9 FM took to the microphone to emcee the event, tapping an encyclopedic knowledge of autos to describe many of the cars parked in the forecourt of Waveny House and elsewhere, while spectators sipped coffee—much of it purchased from Zumbach’s eponymous gourmet shop, which operated a stand near the center of the action—leash-walked their dogs, shot photos and video, talked shop and connected with fellow enthusiasts. Zumbach estimated the crowd at 3,000 to 3,5000 and the car count was at 800-plus.

Coming Sunday Oct. 25: New Canaan Chamber of Commerce 34th Annual Halloween Parade

The New Canaan Chamber of Commerce will put on its 34th annual Halloween Parade on Sunday, Oct. 25. The event kicks off at noon with families’ gathering in the Park Street parking lot to receive goodie bags (while supplies last!) with a 1 p.m. Parade kick off lead by Old Faithful, rain or shine. The “Party” at the Park Street lot will include fun for all. The School of Rock will serenade parade-goers with Halloween tunes such as the “Monster Mash,” “Werewolves of London” and “Ghostbusters” while Toddlertime Nursery School will host the Great Scirico, who will be creating balloon animals.

‘Shred Day’ at Bankwell on Elm Street

As part of an ongoing effort to prevent identity theft in the community, Bankwell in New Canaan is providing free on-site shredding services at the Bank’s 208 Elm Street branch on Saturday, October 3rd from 9:00 a.m. until noon. The Bank encourages residents of the community to take the opportunity to securely dispose of old disks, credit cards, passports, bills, invoices, checks, statements or other personal papers. The Bank requests that each individual limit their items to two 2’ square boxes. New Canaan Animal Control Officer Allyson Halm last week fielded a call on Buttery Road about an injured hawk in a pool. At about 1:21 p.m. on Sept. 21, Halm, now head of the NCPD Animal Control section, responded to the call and found that the bird had perished. Halm also noticed that the bird was actually a kestrel, or small falcon sometimes called a “sparrow hawk,” and contacted an area museum that typically wants (as in this case) the carcass for taxidermy. The bird species is said to be declining in numbers in New England.

It’s Spirit Week at New Canaan High School, and Tuesday was “Costume Day.” The photos above were snapped at ABC House of New Canaan Tuesday morning (thanks, John). ABC House is set to hold its 42 annual fundraiser at the Country Club of New Canaan. The gala will include a live auction and raffle, and will be attended by ABC scholars, their families and host families. Here’s more information on the event and how to get tickets. ***
