Letter: Town Council Candidate John Engel ‘All In’ for New Canaan

Dear Editor,

I would like to strongly endorse John Engel for reelection to the Town Council. As a parent raising a third generation of New Canaanites (or is it fourth?), a homeowner, a commercial property landlord, and a Realtor, John is “all-in” for New Canaan.  John is always around town and enjoys little more than talking with people about the issues that are of importance to them. He then carries those views into the town policy-making process to help make sure that the different perspectives are heard. While very polite and civil, he is not afraid to challenge the consensus in order to get to an even better outcome. He is especially focused on showing both current and potential residents that the town balances its budgets and actively works to keep taxes low. Please join me in helping to reelect John to another term on Town Council.

Letter: Rich Townsend Best Candidate for ‘Future Success of New Canaan’

On Election Day, I will be casting my ballot for Richard Townsend to become a member of New Canaan’s town council. Rich and his wife Cathy were two of the first welcoming members of New Canaan when we were considering moving to town and began attending the United Methodist Church three years ago. Rich is a dedicated member of our choir and helps run the monthly outings for New Canaan’s presence at Habitat for Humanity building houses in Bridgeport. Rich is always encouraging but never pushy to gather us to join him on a given Saturday to help with Habitat. I often see him walking around town and sometimes bump into him on Elm Street; he’s always in the best of moods.

Letter: Tom Butterworth ‘Is What We Need’ on Town Council

Editor:

Tom Butterworth is running for Town Council, and I support his candidacy. Tom is a reasonable, energetic and spirited member of the New Canaan community, who is concerned about maintaining the integrity of our town’s political process in the context of fair-minded and rational debate. He has seen what happens when a few citizens armed with less than fully baked notions of public safety take on volunteer commissioners who have openly and thoroughly studied the pros and cons of a course of action—it’s not pretty, and Tom wants better for our town. He will listen to the citizens of New Canaan, but he will always seek to support and work cooperatively with our selectmen and the volunteer commissioners who love New Canaan. Tom Butterworth is a man who brings out the best in others; he knows how to lead, and he knows how to motivate.

Letter: Town Council Candidate Rich Townsend Will Protect New Canaan Taxpayers

Connecticut has the wealthiest, most educated citizens of any state in the nation. So why is our state government broke? We lack a state budget and risk downgrades from rating agencies. Connecticut could become the first junk-rated state in the nation. It doesn’t matter how rich you are—if you spend more than you make, then sooner or later you are going to be in trouble.

Letter: Corbet Endorses Rob Fryer for Town Treasurer

New Canaan is blessed with many resources and I can think of no one better than Rob Fryer—a CPA and experienced finance and accounting professional—for the role of town treasurer. As a former member of the Board of Finance, candidate for town treasurer in 2011 and soon-to-be former town councilman, I know firsthand that New Canaan would greatly benefit from Rob’s experience as a retired partner at a Big Four accounting firm and as an effective member of the New Canaan Community Foundation and the New Canaan Land Trust. Rob’s expertise in the oversight and implementation of financial controls—coupled with his availability and time commitment—offers New Canaan a tremendous opportunity to help steer the right course in cash management and bond financings and will provide the town’s senior leadership, boards and commissions with invaluable consultation in financial matters. As a nearly 30-year resident of New Canaan, Rob is above all a great man of integrity and character—nothing rattles him—which is why he is often sought for his thoughtful views on many different issues.
