Two Pedestrians Struck by SUV at South and Harrison Avenues on Monday Night

An SUV struck two pedestrians at South and Harrison Avenues on Monday night, police said. New Canaan Police received a call about the incident at 6:21 p.m., according to Lt. Jason Ferraro, the department’s public information officer. Both pedestrians were transported to Norwalk Hospital’s Emergency Room, Ferraro said in a press release. Their condition was not immediately known. At about 7:40 p.m., an accident reconstruction unit from the Darien Police Department arrived on the scene.

At about 12:19 p.m., two suspects forced entry into the back door of a Birchwood Avenue home, according to Lt. Jason Ferraro, NCPD’s public information officer. The break-in was caught on a video surveillance system (see video above) and the homeowner contacted police. “Upon arriving officers were unable to apprehend the suspects who fled in a white 4-door hatchback older model 2000-2007 Subaru Impreza missing a front license plate,” Ferraro said.

The man was moving a piece of plywood when he fell through a hole in the ceiling of the partially built home, from the third to second floor, police said. ***

Two Residential Burglaries Reported in New Canaan; $2,859 in Electronics Stolen from Old Stamford Road Home

Nearly $3,000 in electronics was stolen last week from an unlocked Old Stamford Road home, police said—one of two residential burglaries that has authorities once again urging New Canaanites to exercise caution. The Old Stamford Road incident appears to have occurred some time between 8:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Dec. 1, according to a police report. A homeowner told police that he’d closed but not locked an exterior door that morning and when he arrived back home, noticed that it was partially open, the report said. Missing items include a flatscreen TV, iMac, Playstation 4, Apple TV, hard drive, iPod Touch and Dell computer screen—about $2,859 worth of electronics, the report said.

Newly promoted Sgt. Marc DeFelice of the New Canaan Police Department describes his uncle, Dinny Lapolla, as a man of few words. “So when he talks, he makes his point,” DeFelice told a roomful of fellow officers and their families, town officials and guests on Tuesday night. During a special ceremony that saw DeFelice officially was promoted to the rank of sergeant—his was one of four promotions made on the night, in addition to three special awards given to other officers (see gallery above for information and quotes from honorees)—the New Canaan High School graduate recalled what his uncle, himself a 30-year veteran of the force, told him on getting hired. “He said, ‘Go out there and do the right thing,’ ” DeFelice recalled from a podium in the Douglass Room at Lapham Community Center.
