New Canaan Firefighters Respond to Chimney Fire on East Maple Street Late Wednesday

Firefighters on Wednesday night responded to a chimney fire on East Maple Street that appears to have been caused by a buildup of tar from lack of cleaning, officials said. New Canaan Fire Department Engine 1, Ladder 3 and Engine 2 at about 7:05 p.m. responded to 39 East Maple St. on a report of a chimney fire that required additional manpower to contain. No one was injured, officials said. A full hour after the call, the fire’s flames had been extinguished though it was still acive, as steam could be seen rising from the structure while firefighters climbed the roof, began breaking apart the brick chimney and spraying in with water.

We’re hearing from an inside source that the “new” Gates Restaurant, closed since the New Canaan mainstay was sold in April, will open early in January. We’re also hearing that locals will recognize some friendly, favorite faces at Gates when it reopens anew, including Rich “Doc” Ludemann (not our source)—a popular figure at the former restaurant (who many of us also call a good friend and former swim coach). The new restaurant will be heavy on craft beers, with an updated look and menu, stage for live music, wood-fired oven and grill, smoker, food bar and more features. ***

Joe Scarborough is listed as one of those who has supported (with $360) the Go Fund Me campaign for the New Canaan Police Department’s K-9 unit. In all, 29 individuals have donated a total of $2,300 to the cause.

The holidays are an exciting time of year and to help ensure a safe holiday season, here are some tips from the New Canaan Fire Marshal’s Office. Trees

When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the UL label and “Fire Resistant.” When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness. A fresh tree is green, needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. The trunk butt of a fresh tree is sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles.

New Canaan Police say they will run a DUI checkpoint in town during the week of Christmas. The specific date and location of the checkpoint isn’t known—the department is putting out word in order to put residents on notice to stay safe and aware during the holiday, said Police Lt. Jason Ferraro. ***

Police released additional details in the accident last Monday that saw one construction worker fall an entire story at a home that’s being built on Carter Street. The man was moving a piece of plywood when he fell through a hole in the ceiling of the partially built home, from the third to second floor, police said. ***

Officials at Town Hall are grappling with a problem involving the boilers at the newly renovated and expanded building.

New Canaan Police on Monday investigated a residential, daytime burglary on Birchwood Avenue. Police Chief Leon Krolikowski said that force was used to enter the house, no alarm was set and it’s not yet clear if anything was taken. On Tuesday, police began investigating a similar burglary on Old Stamford Road. The incidents are promoting Krolikowski to urge residents to always set their home and vehicle alarms, lock up, secure all valuables and report suspicious people and vehicles to the police via 9-1-1.
