New Canaan Soccer Association Roundup: Strong D, Goal-Scorers Aplenty for Girls and Boys

New Canaan U9 Girls Red defeat FUSA 7-1

The New Canaan U9 Girls Red soccer team exploded in its second game of the season, defeating Fairfield United Team 2 with a score of 7-1. New Canaan came out strong and stormed the opposition netting six goals in the first half. Ava Pertusiello, Lexie Tully, Lila Volpe, Summer Achille, Fiona Mueller and Alexandra Gelvin each scored for the Red.

The New Canaan Soccer Girls U10 Red Team Gives Darien the Blues 

The New Canaan Soccer Girls U10 Red Team opened regular season play Sunday, on the road against the Darien Blue Team. Just one week after being defeated by Darien in the Fall Annual Soccer Tournament, the two teams met again on the pitch for a heated rematch that resulted in an impressive 7-2 victory for the New Canaan squad. The first 10 minutes of the game was a scoreless back-and-forth battle for control of the ball.

New Canaan U9 Boys Red Soccer Team Takes 2nd in First-Ever Tournament

The following write-up came in from the New Canaan Soccer Association Boys Red U9 team—the youngest age for travel soccer and newest group representing New Canaan in the sport. After only two practices together, the brand-new team of New Canaan 7- and 8 -year-olds competed in their first ever travel soccer games and confidently defeated three of four opponents at the Fairfield Fast 2014 Labor Day Tournament on Sunday August 31, 2014. In their first game, an exciting match against a Fairfield United team, they were behind by one after just a few minutes of play. But the team relaxed into the game and responded with three unanswered goals in a row, finishing with a 5-3 victory.

As the sun set on New Canaan’s Pop Up Park (set up between Morse Court and Elm on South Avenue), hundreds of New Canaanites gathered around three flat-screen TVs beneath and around a white party tent early Sunday evening to cheer on the United States Men’s National Soccer Team as they took on a strong Portuguese team (ranked #4 in the world) in a thrilling group showdown of the 2014 World Cup. (New Canaan Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tucker Murphy estimated that more than 500 residents were at the park at its height.)

Prior to kickoff, activities such as a raffle for a custom-designed USA blazer and other prizes were in full swing as piles of pizza boxes were devoured by hungry soccer fans. The event was a joint effort of the New Canaan Soccer Association with support from the Local First Fund of the New Canaan Community Foundation, Town of New Canaan, the chamber, Realty Guild and ESPN.

New Canaan Soccer Association U13 Girls Red Team Finishes 1st in CJSA Premier League

The U13 Girls Red team lead by UK Elite Coach, Barry Beattie, entered the Fall 2013 CJSA Travel Soccer playoffs as the No. 1 seed after an undefeated season. They defeated the Stamford Hurricanes 2-0 in the semifinals. The following day they faced Darien Blue in the Division A CT Junior Soccer Association’s Southwest District Championship, winning 2-1 and claiming victory in the Division A Southwest District Championship. New Canaan finished its Fall season by outscoring its opponents 30-5 without ever ceding more than one goal in any game.
