VIDEO: New Canaan Remembers, Honors Those Lost on 9/11

9 11 Memorial Ceremony New Canaan Sept 9 2016
Uploaded by Michael Dinan on 2016-09-09. For New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski, a town resident, father and U.S. Marines veteran, no words or ceremony could replace the losses that our nation suffered in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. What we can do, Krolikowski told those gathered in front of Town Hall on a hot and humid Friday morning, is “reflect, and honor each day those we have lost—and we must never forget.”

“The most fitting ceremony for the lives lost on September 11 is not etched on the memorial across the street,” Krolikowski said during a solemn memorial ceremony honoring those lost on 9/11, referring to a 16-foot section of steel column from the core section of World Trade Center Tower One on the 99thfloor—just above the impact point of United flight 175—that stands outside the New Canaan Firehouse. “And is not the ceremony today, but it is etched in our hearts as we enjoy the freedom that was made possible by the grave sacrifice of the many lives that have been lost from September 11th forward.

The alpacas of Crajah House on Oenoke Ridge Road on Tuesday were shorn of their thick winter coats—see photos above. Their owner, New Canaan’s Debbie McQuilkin, tells us the process for each “blanket” includes picking out sticks, hay and straw, then going for the secondary areas of the neck, backside and legs. The material is sent to a fiber mill where it’s washed, cleaned again and dyed or made into a yarn that McQuilkin herself chooses—fine knitting or heavy weaving for rugs. It also can be sent back for hand spinning or felting, McQuilkin said. The alpaca fleece is hypoallergenic and contains no lanolin, and it’s naturally fire-resistant.

Police: Mercedes Crosses Oncoming Traffic Lane, Crashes on North Wilton Road

A young motorist sped across an oncoming traffic lane and off of a rain-slickened North Wilton Road early Monday afternoon, officials said. No one was seriously injured in the accident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. in the area of 248 North Wilton Road, just beyond the final curve where it comes into Laurel. Police, firefighters and EMTs with the New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the scene, which halted traffic in both directions for about 20 minutes. Officials at the scene said the driver, a young man, had been heading northbound on North Wilton Road shortly after some rainfall. He appeared to veer into the oncoming traffic lane and swerved to avoid a large SUV, sending his car, a Mercedes, onto the grassy shoulder, where it continued and struck a stone wall near a cluster of large trees, officials said.
