‘This Is What I’ve Been Working For’: New Canaan’s Ferraro Selected for Prestigious USA Hockey Camp

Nikki Ferraro wasn’t the first goalie in her family. The New Canaan High School freshman had been playing ice hockey since putting on skates for the first time as a second-grader at East School, and now and again she’d grab the glove and blocker for house games at the New Canaan Winter Club. But her younger brother, Zai, was already playing the position on a regular basis. “My parents were like ‘No, you can’t do it, we already have one goalie, that’s enough,’ ” recalled Ferraro, 15. “But I’m a pretty persistent person, so I would go home and I’d make my brother shoot on me with his pads in the basement.

Experienced New Canaan Softball Team Eyes Return to Postseason Prominence

After an up-and-down 2015 campaign that saw the Rams finishing with a 7-13 record and missing the State playoffs by one game, the goal for New Canaan softball is very clear heading into the 2016 season. Make the postseason. With only two players having graduated last spring, a return to the FCIAC and State playoffs is not expected to be too far of a reach for this year’s squad. Even with the additional loss of would-be senior captain Claire Conley—the last member of the 2013 FCIAC Championship team—who switched over to track this spring, the number of returning starters should keep the Rams in contention in what should be a wide-open conference this year. If New Canaan is going to fulfill their promise in 2016, they’ll be doing it without any named captains this season.

New Canaan Girls Hockey Falls to Ridgefield in FCIAC Semis

DARIEN – Three minutes, 32 seconds. That’s how close the New Canaan girls hockey team was to reaching its tenth consecutive FCIAC finals. Clinging to a 2-1 lead over Ridgefield as the minutes ticked down in Wednesday’s semifinal at Darien Ice Rink, the Rams seemed destined to get back to the championship game, a place no one expected them to be at the start of the season. Destiny, however, was not on New Canaan’s side. Ridgefield scored a power play goal at the 11:28 mark of the 3rd period, and netted the game-winner in overtime as they defeated the Rams 3-2 in a thrilling, yet ultimately disappointing game for head coach Rich Bulan’s squad.
