Private Group Seeks Permission to Display Advertising in Makeshift Ice Rink at Public Park

Parks officials are seeking permission from New Canaan’s legislative body to forgo enforcement of a local ordinance that prohibits advertising in public parks. The Parks & Recreation Commission voted at its meeting last week in favor of allowing a private group to run “dashboard” ads inside a makeshift ice rink that’s planned for Waveny. 

Though the advisory Parks & Rec Commission supported allowing the ads last year—despite concerns voiced then-Recreation Director Steve Benko—the discussion never was vetted by the Town Council because the makeshift rink itself never materialized. Gene Goodman—a principal of the private group behind the rink, NC Rink Inc, according to Connecticut Secretary of the State records—said the ads themselves would be six feet wide by 2.5 feet high. “If you were standing at the perimeter of the dasher boards which will be about four feet high or so, you will be able to see it,” Goodman said during the Nov. 9 Parks & Rec meeting, held in Lapham Community Center.

Boucher, Maher Discuss Affordable Housing, Rising Energy Costs and More During LWV Debate

Although they differ in their approaches to the issues, Republican Toni Boucher and her Democratic opponent, Ceci Maher, mostly see eye-to-eye when it comes to topics such as women’s reproductive rights, early voting, and rising energy costs – but their views diverge more significantly when it comes to affordable housing and how to balance spending with revenue, as revealed during the League of Women Voters New Canaan Candidate Debate held Oct. 20 at Town Hall. The debate featured a total of 10 candidates participating in three races in the state House of Representative and two races in the State Senate – including the race between Boucher and Maher for the 26th State Senate District, which includes Darien, New Canaan, Redding, Ridgefield, Stamford, Weston, Westport, and Wilton. The event was broadcast only – no audience members were allowed. In her opening remarks, Boucher explained that she was first elected to represent the 26th Senatorial District in 2008, after having served as the State Representative from the 143rd Assembly District for 12 years.

The governor’s race appears to be over. NBC Connecticut and other news outlets are reporting that GOP candidate Bob Stefanowski has conceded to Democrat Ned Lamont. Separately, Greenwich Time newspaper has called the state Senate’s 36th District for Alexandra “Alex” Bergstein. It isn’t clear whether the result is official or if the incumbent Republican state Sen. Scott Frantz has conceded. Original Article

About 70 percent of New Canaan voters cast ballots on a cold, rainy Election Day, a high midterm turnout that saw local Democrats flip at least two seats in the state legislature that long have been held by Republicans.

State Rep. Tom O’Dea (R-125th) started his day at 5:50 a.m. in Wilton and he planned to head to New Canaan High School in the early afternoon to greet voters. “It has been what appears to be a record mid-term turnout in Wilton this morning,” he told NewCanaanite.com. “This has been the most rewarding and demanding job of my career and I believe myself Toni Boucher, Scott Frantz and Fred Wilms have earned another two years with all that we have accomplished.”

‘Turnout Has Been Nonstop’: Town Clerk Sees High Number of Absentee Ballots Issued for Midterm Election

Town officials say they’re seeing an extremely high number of absentee ballots issued for next week’s midterm election, a likely sign that New Canaan will see strong voter turnout on Election Day. As of Tuesday, the town had issued 1,017 absentee ballots, according to Town Clerk Claudia Weber. That compares with 564 absentee ballots issued in 2014, the last gubernatorial election year, she said. Weber called the strong showing “tremendous” and “phenomenal.”

“I have never seen a midterm turnout for absentee ballots like this,” Weber told NewCanaanite.com. “Turnout has been nonstop,” she added.
